Blasphemous 2: How to Defeat Afilaor, Sentinel of the Emery

While you may be used to roadblock bosses in these types of games by now, chances are that Afilaor, Sentinel of the Emery, is still going to slow you down a jot in Blasphemous 2. That’s because he’s quick, his attacks are powerful, and he can change what he’s up to pretty much on a dime. Add to that a whole litany of attacks, and you’ve got yourself one tough customer.

The first thing that you’ll want to note here is that Afilaor will occasionally stop to sharpen his blade using the grindstone on his back. The reason you want to watch out for this is that it’s a key opportunity to get a few strikes in on him, as he doesn’t attack during this animation (though he generally will right after it).

For this same reason, it’s good to use the ball and chain weapon. Despite its slow swing time, it’s also got the highest damage and the longest reach, meaning you can attack Afilaor during these windows without putting yourself at risk. Also, you may want to select the red ring projectile attack from your prayers, but if you played the first Blasphemous, you likely already know how effective that is.

This Blasphemous 2 boss will also regularly leap into the background, where he’ll pull out cast-offs from his neverending weapons collections and begin tossing them in your general direction. You want to watch the top of the screen during this attack as you’ll see every weapon a second before it hits, and this gives you a better chance of dodging this somewhat random attack.

Once again, you can get help here from the spear maiden, so be sure to ask her for aid before you start the fight (though, if you told her to take off, it’s probably already too late for that). Next, you’ll want to watch for a landing attack where Afilaor kicks up harmful dust, so dodge away from him as a general rule when he’s landing if you’re not sure what he’s up to.

He will also create these ground disturbance attacks after he does a full airborne swing of his weapon, so remember that during this move. Luckily, for his ricochet blade technique, he will telegraph a trajectory that it will bounce out as it goes, meaning if you stay out of that range or dodge out of it before the blade completes its next step, you’re fine with this move.

This Blasphemous 2 boss also has a move where he spins like a top, and it will get more deadly and long-lasting as he gets closer to death. Be sure and watch for this, as you may turn to attack, thinking he’s done, only to get caught in his one-man turbine. Finally, as he gets close to death, you’ll notice his blade now turns orange. When that’s the case, you have to watch for blade-shaped projectiles that you can dodge through after he sharpens his blade.

Anyway, that’s pretty much it for Afilaor. If you want an extra edge, use the aforementioned projectile prayer attack and space it out so that it will hit him consistently for multiple seconds as it boomerangs back. The blade sharpening animation is an especially good time for this.
