Spider-Man
Developer(s): Insomniac Games
Publisher: SIE
Platform(s): PS4
Release Date: September 7th 2018
The Spider-Man franchise had somewhat of a tempestuous relationship with gaming. For every Spider-Man 2, there was a Spider-Man 3. For Shattered Dimensions, there was The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Insomniac Games are the latest team to try their hand at portraying the Virtual Neighbourhood Spider-Man, and all signs point to a successful outing. No more web swinging on thin air, for starters, but they’re also drawing on elements of more recent canon and characters, like Mr Negative and Miles Morales, to create a more modern Spider-Man game. Could it knock Spider-Man 2 off its throne? We’ll have to see. – AB
Overkill’s The Walking Dead
Developer: Overkill Software
Publisher: Starbreeze Publishing
Platform(s): PC, PS4, XB1
Release date: Fall 2018
Speaking of AWOL games that suddenly made a reappearance, Overkill’s The Walking Dead was hotly-anticipated upon its reveal but then quickly disappeared off a cliff. It made a welcome return at the tail end of 2017 with a pretty great trailer that didn’t show off gameplay, but seeing as it’s from the same guys who created Payday, the license should be in safe hands. A zombie co-op murderthon, it looks like being the Left 4 Dead 3 we will almost certainly never get. – JD
Skull and Bones
Developer: Ubisoft Singapore
Publisher: Ubisoft
Platform(s): PC, XB1, PS4
Release date: Fall 2018
With fans crying out for more of the seafaring seen in AC: Black Flag, Ubisoft decided to go one better and make a game entirely about being a pirate. Revealed (and leaked ahead of time) at E3 2017, Skull and Bones takes place in the golden age of piracy and asks you to build and customise your fleet to take on other pirates, trading corporations, and massive empires. It looks like it will be mainly centred on multiplayer, but if it’s half as entertaining as it was in Black Flag, the life of a pirate could be a fine one indeed. – JD

Red Dead Redemption 2
Developer(s): Rockstar, Rockstar San Diego
Publisher: Rockstar
Platform(s): PS4, XB1
Release Date: October 26th 2018
Let’s all take a minute to thank Rockstar and Take-Two for taking a break from GTA Online updates and Shark Cards to work on Red Dead Redemption 2. The urge to revisit those familiar frontiers has been growing these past few years, and RDR 2 has all the potential in the world to be the best entry in the series. Let’s just hope that the Red Dead Online or whatever it’ll be called isn’t the microtransaction fest that GTA. Or hope there’s no awful zombie DLC. Yeah, I said it. Undead Nightmare was shite. Fight me. – AB
