5 Best PS5 Boxing Games You Should Play

Best PS5 Boxing Games
Best PS5 Boxing Games

They just don’t make boxing games like they used to. Seriously, back in the days of the PS2 and PS3 era, there’d be plenty of different boxing titles from a range of developers, all looking to satisfy the pugilistic punters who enjoy seeing two people smack each other around in their oversized gloves. From Ready 2 Rumble to Fight Night, it was a pretty good time to be a boxing fan. While the PS4 seemingly lacked boxing games, at least those from big publishers, the future is looking a lot brighter for PS5 boxing games.

Granted, the boxing selection on offer on PlayStation 5 at the moment isn’t plentiful, even less so if you don’t fancy virtual reality, but with a console port of Undisputed in the pipeline, along with EA reportedly working on a Fight Night reboot after the launch of UFC 5, there’s a lot to be excited about. Until those games launch though, let’s celebrate the best PS5 boxing games that are available right now.

5. Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 – The Official Video Game

Developer: SEGA
Publisher: SEGA

Considering that the official Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 game is just a collection of mini-games based on the various sports involved in the massive international competition, it’s really hard to rank this release higher. It just about fulfils the criteria, but that doesn’t mean you should discount this one, as the arcade-inspired boxing minigame is incredibly fun.

Far from being a realistic take on the sweet science, Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 – The Official Video Game is filled with flashy special moves, a huge shield appears when you block and the whole thing looks more like Ready 2 Rumble Boxing than it does Fight Night. With plenty of other solid minigames too, Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 – The Official Video Game is worth checking out.

Come for the boxing, stay for the track and field events.

4. Pato Box

Publisher: Bromio, 2Think Design Studio

Considering Nintendo isn’t doing anything with the Punch-Out franchise at the minute, it falls to indie developers to create their best homages to such a classic boxing title. Pato Box is one such release, but calling it a simple Punch-Out clone would be doing a disservice to the absolute ludicrousness you can expect from this game’s main story. The main character is a guy with a duck’s head, for starters.

Pato Box sees you fighting your way through an evil corporation to find the 7 people who wronged you, before battering them in Punch-Out like fashion. Far from just being a series of fights, Pato Box keeps the over the shoulder camera but lets you explore a massive environment filled with secrets, traps and bosses to fight.

Stay calm, dodge and weave, and you might just be world champion once again.

3. Big Rumble Boxing: Creed Champions

Developer: Survios
Publisher: Survios, Plaion

When it comes to boxing franchises, there’s none bigger than the Rocky/Creed series. With many films to mine for inspiration, it’s not shocking to know that there’s also been a wealth of spin-off games too. While Big Rumble Boxing: Creed Champions isn’t the most perfect boxing game to ever grace the Earth with its presence, there’s a fun, pick-up-and-play arcade mentality that makes this game super accessible for most players.

As the name would imply, Big Rumble Boxing: Creed Champions brings together some of the most iconic characters from the franchise’s near 50 year history, and lets you do battle with some dream matches.

If pitting father against son with Apollo and Adonis Creed sounds like your cup of tea, Big Rumble Boxing: Creed Champions is the game for you.

2. Knockout League

Considering the fact that you need a PSVR headset to play Knockout League, it’s not going to be the boxing game for everyone, but if you’ve got the time, money and space to invest in VR, Knockout League is an absolute must-buy. With an elevator pitch of a VR Punch-Out, complete with ridiculous characters and even more ridiculous moves. Watch out for The Magician’s rabbit, let’s just say that.

While accuracy is thrown out the window with Knockout League, especially considering you fight a giant, tea drinking octopus at one point, what Knockout League excels at is its 1:1 tracking, and the ability to make you work up a sweat.

If throwing a few punches is how you prefer to exercise, why not add a few pounds as resistance by wearing your VR headset and playing Knockout League and drop a few pounds while you’re at it?

1. Creed: Rise To Glory

Developer: Survios
Publisher: Survios, Sony Interactive Entertainment

Circling back to the Rocky/Creed franchise, developers Survios already struck gold when it came to boxing games with their VR hit Creed: Rise To Glory. Like Knockout League, the very nature of VR means that Creed: Rise To Glory is hard to recommend to anyone other than the well-off, but when it comes to the best PS5 boxing games you can play right now, Creed: Rise To Glory is simply undisputed.

Like Creed Champions, Creed: Rise To Glory features characters from across the Rocky and Creed series, with players able to do battle across Freeplay and online modes. However, if you’d rather experience the ascent of Adonis Creed, the Career Mode allows you to recreate the matches of the films too.

Thanks to its excellent gameplay and decent depth, Creed: Rise To Glory is simply the best PS5 boxing game you can play right now and ensures that the Rocky adaptations actually have a pretty high success rate across the board.
