Assassin’s Creed: Time to Give Up on Assassins vs Templars?

Templars vs Assassins

After revisiting the greatest Assassin’s Creed game in the whole franchise, Assassin’s Creed II, it seems as if the series is coming to a head with the latest release from Ubisoft, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate.

The neverending battle between the Templars and the Assassins, whilst plausible in the first two of the AC games, became a bit silly by AC III before, thankfully, Desmond Miles was put to rest and we were given a new, faceless protagonist to control who took us into the world of Edward Kenway. Piracy and sea shanties followed and then we went further into the world of Arno Dorian and the French Revolution.

Although these worlds are full of things to do and places to see, I find the eternal battle between Templars and Assassins is getting a bit old. Even with their new facelift, calling themselves ‘Abstergo’, I find myself not looking forward to the Adventures of Jacob and Evie Frye.

Perhaps this is because frankly I don’t care about their struggle or how the downtrodden classes rise up against their upper-class masters. Whilst I enjoyed the freedom given to you when exploring the map in Black Flag and the choice given to you as to how you complete your tasks,  I feel as if this series has already reached its peak and is now desperately trying to stay on top.

Undoubtedly, there are things to be positive about with the introduction of the rope launcher, but I wonder whether this will get any better?

Where will AC go from here? A step into the future? Will we see some other tough talking assassin amidst the mud and blood of Flanders fields or fighting prohibition rum runners in 1920’s America? Although these will be welcomed with enthusiasm, it is surely as good a time as ever to take one step back from all this and really assess what is good for the series.

I will always be a fan, the AC series has taught me a lot about world events (even though I take the retelling of these within the respective games with a pinch of salt) I hope not to see another AC installation rushed out next year.

What they need to concentrate on is what made the first AC such a ground-breaking game: free-running abilities, different missions, different locations, sandbox map types where the player is not shoved from one mission to the next without being given the time to explore, but most of all, it needs to reassess whether the Templar-Assassin feud will still be raging when we eventually see the next AC title. Like everyone will tell you, all feuds have to end eventually…right?
