Apex Legends Gibraltar Guide: Abilities, Skins & How To Plauy

Gibraltar is an Apex Legends character you can't help but love, so we put together a very simple guide on how you can play him to his best.

Gibraltar is someone that you can’t help but love in Apex Legends. His entire reason for being in the Apex Games is to make sure no harm comes to the ones he loves, which, when compared with his generally upbeat and happy demeanour, makes him seem like something out of a Pixar movie. Caustic, he ain’t.

The total unit is designed to be a support character in Apex Legends, which means that he is best suited to sit back a little and provide some cover to those who are coming under heavy fire. His size makes him something of a huge target for other players, though his abilities do offset his larger hitboxes somewhat.

Gibraltar is one of the most straightforward Legends to get to grips with in Apex Legends. He’s a big tank with a heart of gold, so here’s how you can make the most of him with our Apex Legends Gibraltar guide.

Apex Legends Gibraltar Bio

Gibraltar Bio

Real Name: Makoa Gibraltar
Age: 30

“Gibraltar is a gentle giant with a wild side. The son of two SARAS (Search and Rescue Association of Solace) volunteers, he has always been skilled at getting others out of dangerous situations that are common in the Outlands. However, he only began to understand the value of protecting others when he and his boyfriend stole his father’s motorcycle, took it on a joyride, and got trapped by a deadly mudslide. His parents saved them, and his father lost an arm in the process. Gibraltar has never forgotten that sacrifice and has devoted his life to helping those in need.

“The Apex Games didn’t change that, but they changed what it meant. Many of Gibraltar’s friends and colleagues have competed in the Games for extra money, fame, and glory over the years, and some never came home. Gibraltar joined to keep them safe and, for the first time, his skills as a rescuer and his rebellious nature worked together. He’s now become an icon in the Apex Games, putting himself in the line of fire to protect his squad and send his opponents running for cover.”

Apex Legends Gibraltar Abilties

Gibraltar Abilities

Passive Ability: Gun Shield – chucks up a small shield at Gibraltar’s chest height that can take roughly fifty damage before it breaks; can really be the dealbreaker for many engagements.

Tactical Ability: Dome of Protection – a hugely welcome barrier that blocks all incoming and outgoing attacks for fifteen seconds, though aggro players will invariably still try to push you.

Ultimate Ability: Defensive Bombardment – a massively underrated Ultimate that allows Gibraltar to call in an almost immediate bombardment that can wipe out shields before anyone knows what’s going on.

How To Play As Gibraltar In Apex Legends

Apex Legends

Gibraltar is not designed to be leading the fight as his entire ethos is that of support, so much so that he pairs remarkably well with almost Legend but Lifeline in particular, who can utilise the shield for maximum revive coverage from gunfire. He’s a great introductory Legend for many as his abilities are very user friendly, though his large size makes him a large target for other players to shoot at. The Gun Shield helps somewhat, but you can shoot bullets simply in the general direction of Gibraltar and they will hit due to his girth. Coming up against a Gibraltar with a Gun Shield as as well as purple armour can be quite the psychological damager, mind.

Bearing that in mind, Dome of Protection can offer some much needed respite and some security during a surprise attack or just after an engagement so you and your team can heal up. While bullets can’t come in or out of the shield, other players can. Most fairly experienced players know that you can juke on the outskirts of a shield to hit shots on players inside, so do not think that you’re 100% safe. In addition, other players may just be watching on and counting down the seconds until they can throw a barrage of grenades your way.

There are some situations where chucking down a Dome of Protection simply makes sense. Interior environments like Bunker can really help you to reload the three bullets left for your P2020 in relative safety, but the Dome will also help if you’re going for a Respawn Beacon which asks you to stand still for too many seconds for you to ever be comfortable with what it’s asking of you. Beware, though, that the Dome may also bring some attention your way as it is fairly noticeable.

Where Gibraltar truly shines is with his Ultimate, which feels like one of few Ults that can truly turn around an engagement all on its own. It’s not too dissimilar to Bangalore’s, but other players are not given much warning whatsoever before everything starts to explode around them — it also does more damage than Bangalore’s Ult. Chucking down a Dome of Protection gives you total safety from the bombardment, too.

When all is said and done, Gibraltar is one of the game’s better balanced Legends. While his abilities sound overpowered on paper, the bulk and obviousness of him kind of makes up for that. Remember that while his slowly moving arms may make you think otherwise, all character in Apex Legends move at the same pace, but it’s still difficult to recommend you go ziplining and sliding  around the map as he’s just so easy to spot.  Sit back a little and don’t try to play like Wraith and you could be the water carrier your squad needs.

From our Apex Legends review:

“Even the most jaded of battle royale fans will find their interest rejuvenated by Apex Legends thanks to Respawn’s attention to detail, superior gunplay, and fantastic innovations, though the loot boxes and progression system certainly need addressing.”
