Amazon have announced that they’ve just commissioned a multiple season deal for the long rumoured and awaited TV series based on the J.R.R Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings books.

Arguably it could be the biggest TV adaptation of a known property ever, but there is a caveat: the TV series will be based on events that take place before The Fellowship of the Ring. It’s unclear if that will mean it takes place before, during or after The Hobbit, but that will all become clear in due time.

Matt Galsor, a key representative for the Tolkien Estate and Trust and HarperCollins, said this about the deal: “We are delighted that Amazon, with its longstanding commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for The Lord of the Rings. Sharon and the team at Amazon Studios have exceptional ideas to bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s original writings.”

The series will premiere on Amazon Prime, but no writers or directors have been assigned to the project. This news comes as the fantasy hit series Game of Thrones is entering its final season, with many spin-off concepts currently in production. It makes sense that Amazon would want to create something that could rival the Game of Thrones hype train. Making a series based on one of pop culture’s biggest hitters would go to great lengths to do so.

Still, the fact that the series will not follow the events laid out in the books raises the question of whether or not the series will match the quality of the books and films that preceded it. The Lord of the Rings franchise has a long legacy to live up to, which could scupper the series before it’s even entered production.
