Fortnite v5.40 Adds Suppressed Assault Rifle, Vaults Drum Gun

Fortnite Suppressed Assault Rifle

With its battle royale crown sure to be tested in the coming months by Call of Duty and maybe even Battlefield if it can get its act together, Fortnite just needs to keep doing what it’s been doing for the past nine months: keep adding fresh content and take out what doesn’t work.

The v5.40 content update adds a new gun in the form of the Suppressed Assault Rifle, which you can find either in Epic and Legendary variants. Dealing 32/33 damage per shot, it will effectively be a longer-range version of the Suppressed SMG, meaning that you can spook John Wicks into building huge towers from greater distance with a single shot.

More interesting than a new weapon, however, is the removal of a controversial one. The Drum Gun and its massive bloody magazine has been vaulted, which means that it is no longer available in the game buy may return at some point in the future with tweaks.

The Drum Gun has divided the Fortnite community, much like the Compact SMG before it and the Double Pump method before that. Season 5 has been dubbed the “season of spray” due to its over-reliance on SMG weapons. Some players believe that the power of certain weapons has lowered the skill ceiling and damaged the reliability of building.

With Season 6 on the horizon and the belief that Fortnite is losing its mojo, Epic may be looking at getting back to the “good old days” that so many players pine for. All they need to do now is add back the old music and people on their Twitter account can shut up once and for all.
