Fortnite’s New Mobile Version Lets You Play Against PS4 & PC Players

Fortnite Battle Royale landing spots

Well, this is a weird one: Epic have announced that Fortnite’s behemothic Battle Royale mode will soon be playable on iOS with an Android version, the shock of shocks, to follow afterwards.

You will be able to enjoy the full Fortnite: Battle Royale experience on mobile devices; they aren’t making any concessions:

“Fortnite is the same 100-player game you know from PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Mac. Same gameplay, same map, same content, same weekly updates.”

Interestingly, however, the mobile version will only be cross-play between mobiles, PC, Mac, and PS4 — Xbox One players have for some reason been left out of the conversation:

“In partnership with our friends at Sony, Fortnite Battle Royale will support Cross Play and Cross Progression between PlayStation 4, PC, Mac, iOS and eventually Android. This means players across devices can squad up with friends and play together.”

Even more interestingly, this represents one of the first times the previously stubborn Sony have allowed cross-play. For the briefest of times, Battle Royale players on PS4 and Xbox One were able to play each other after an “accidental” flipping of the switch from Epic.

Speaking of switches, if FBR can run on mobile devices, it’s not unlikely that it won’t also be able to comfortably perform on a Nintendo Switch. I am pretty curious to see how it works on mobile considering just how finicky the controls can be on a controller or keyboard, so I have no idea how that will translate to a mobile screen. Sign-ups for the iOS version are available from Monday, so I guess I will find out soon enough.

This move represents the latest example of FBR beating its main inspiration to the punch. It was available on console before PUBG’s muddy launch on Xbox One and has also launched a mobile version in the West before PUBG’s wildly successful version, which is currently only (legitimately) available in Asia.
