Want a New Red Dead Game? Here’s Red Dead Revolver on PS4 Instead

Rockstar caused many heart palpitations across the world today when they announced that a Red Dead would be coming to the PS4. Not a new Red Dead game or even the much sought after Red Dead Redemption remaster, but an upscaled version of the cult classic Red Dead Revolver instead.

The precursor to one of the most beloved games of all time, Red Dead Revolver only shares a similar setting with its younger brother as it’s an altogether different experience. It’s more of an on-rails, arcade-y shooter that impressed some on its release, but has faded away into cult status over recent years. If you’re interested in getting your hands on it, you can either scour eBay for an older copy or head over to the PlayStation Store and download it for $14.99.

The pseudo-remaster will come with 1080p graphics and “Trophies, Shareplay, Remote Play, Activity Feeds and Second Screen support for game manuals with PS Vita or PS App”, which is your standard PS2 to PS4 port requirements. Revolver joins many of Rockstar’s older games having a makeover for the current generation with the likes of The Warriors and Bully coming to the console.

Coming in at twelve years old, Red Dead Revolver was originally a Capcom property before the rights were snapped up by Rockstar and the studio behind it, who would then go on to become Rockstar San Diego, the geniuses behind Red Dead Redemption. As a sidenote, they aren’t quite squeaky clean according to former employees with complaints about the dreaded crunch being aplenty.

Rockstar have been putting out an awful lot of remasters lately and seem pretty keen on coasting by on GTA Online microtransactions alone. It’s a big money earner for them, but it’s been three years since GTA V now and little has been heard since. Despite promising new games back in May, nothing has been announced and it looks like they won’t be for a while longer yet.

As for Red Dead Revolver, I have fond memories of it, so I don’t really want to tar them by noticing if it’s aged with this update. I learnt that lesson from Star Wars: Bounty Hunter.

Never again.
