When you think back to the glory days of the PS2 and all of the games that came with it, there are many that stick in the mind. The tanker level on MGS2 is one of them, as is storming the beaches of Normandy in Medal of Honor: Frontline. However, for imagery that stays vividly in your mind for years after last playing it, it’s hard to beat the melancholic masterpiece that is Shadow of the Colossus.
As a PS2 exclusive, not everyone had the opportunity to play it, but thanks to the guys who are making Prey for the Gods, PC and Mac gamers could be about to enjoy the next best thing.
It doesn’t so much as wear the Shadow inspiration on its sleeve as it does suit up a onesie and roll around on the floor hoping that nobody notices. All of the mechanics seem to be the same, leading to a couple of raised eyebrows from the gaming community. Early impressions suggest that it could be a bit too dependent on Shadow for its inspiration, but it will be interesting to see how it turns out.
According to its description:
“In Prey for the Gods, you play a lone hero sent to the edge of a dying world to discover the mystery behind a never-ending winter. Arriving with only the clothes on your back, you must survive the colossal dangers that you encounter. To restore balance and reclaim the land from the brink, you will be faced with questions that not even a God knows the answer to.”
So pretty much Shadow of the Colossus north of the wall, then. It’s always going to find it hard to shake off the comparison and with a lot of love for its obvious source of inspiration, it could be too much to ask gamers to just shrug it off.
