GTA VI Will Not Be Getting A Physical Disc

In surprising news, Rockstar has announced that Grand Theft Auto VI will not be getting a physical disc when it launches this November. Instead, the physical cases of the game will simply come with a code in a box to redeem on digital storefronts.

It’s quite the shock for a series that has more or less always been physical, and surely a devastating blow to the future of physical gaming. It’s been a rough time for physical sales of late, but many predicted GTA VI to be the last great hold-out and to give them one last gargantuan push in the right direction. There’s no next to no chance we’ll be seeing midnight queues around the corner like old times due to this development, which is a shame. It will be interesting to see how GameStop stocks react to this, and just largely what a knock-on effect this will have.

If even GTA can’t get a physical release anymore, there’s little doubt that other publishers will be following suit with this not-actually-physical route. Considering the Switch 2’s game key cards, the writing must surely be on the wall for the greatest of video game traditions: actually owning your games.
