PlayStation Just Killed Physical Gaming

PlayStation Productions

We’ve been wondering when exactly physical gaming will lose its long battle against digital, but we now seem to have an official date. Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that it will discontinue physical game disc production for all new games released on PlayStation consoles from January 2028.

After that date, all newly released PlayStation games will be available in digital formats only, both through the PlayStation Store and participating retailers. The company confirmed that the change will not affect games released before January 2028, with existing physical releases continuing to be supported. This seems to all but confirm that the PlayStation 6 will be a fully digital console.

Sony said the move reflects changing consumer habits, stating: “This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs.”

The company added that the transition will allow it to better match how players access games today, saying it will “align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today.”

Sony also confirmed it will continue investing in digital distribution, stating: “We’ll continue to prioritize our resources to drive innovation in how players can access games and provide choices as to where players prefer to purchase new games, whether that’s at retailers or PlayStation Store.”

Frankly, this is a lot of corporate speak that can be summed up as “Give me money. Money me. Money now. Me a money needing a lot now.” Sony clearly doesn’t want to give any of its money to retailers or manufacturers anymore, and will kill off physical gaming to make sure their bottom line looks as nice as possible. The lack of physical discs for GTA 6 may have been a bit of a joke, but nobody who cares about preservation will be laughing at this one.
