Fans of rock and stone and Lord of the Rings might be in for a bit of a treat today with the release of The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria on PC; a PS5 release has recently been delayed until December.
Seemingly most heavily inspired by Deep Rock Galactic, Return to Moria is a survival game with crafting in a procedurally generated map that takes place across the dark and the dank of the titular Moria. Up to eight players can mine for resources like Mythril down in the depths, battle vicious orcs, and build bases.
Here’s a quick lowdown on Return to Moria from the developer:
Summoned to the Misty Mountains by Lord Gimli Lockbearer, players take control of a company of Dwarves tasked to reclaim the lost spoils from the Dwarven homeland of Moria—known as Khazad-dûm or Dwarrowdelf—in the depths below their very feet. Their quest will require fortitude, delving deep into the Mines of Moria to recover its treasures.
Set in a procedurally generated Dwarven realm of Moria, no two adventures will be alike, and every expedition is traversable either solo or online with companions. Players can mine to craft greater gear and resources, but beware mining makes noise, and noise created in the quiet deep threatens to awaken the dangers below: where there’s clatter, there’s combat. Excavate the mysteries of three legendary mountains, extract precious metals, scrape to survive, and battle unspeakable forces to learn the secret of the Shadow that lurks within.
Developed by Free Range Games and published by North Beach Games, The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria will be a timed exclusive for the Epic Games Store. It should come to Steam after a year or so, as it’s not published by Epic themselves. It looks very much like a game that will soak up more hours than the Extended Trilogy, and it really doesn’t have to do much to be better than another Rings game released in 2023.
