Much like how February is the month of romance, October is the month of all things spooky. However, this doesn’t mean that only horror fans get to enjoy the big releases this month. October 2023 movie season has some variety for sure, with possible Oscar contenders and the release of what’s likely to be the biggest movie of the year in terms of box office sales – you’ll know immediately which movie I’m referring to while scrolling the list.
There are also some movies that didn’t make the list, like a new Exorcist movie and the prequel to Pet Sematary. Here are the biggest new movies of October 2023.
New Movies of October 2023
1. Totally Killer | October 6th 2023
Remember 2015’s The Final Girls, where a teen girl is magically transported into B horror movie her mom stars in and has to survive a serial killer? Totally Killer practically has the exact same premise.
35 years after the murder of three teens, the infamous Sweet Sixteen Killer returns on Halloween night to claim a fourth victim. Jamie (Kiernan Shipka) ignores her overprotective mom’s (Julie Bowen) warning and comes face-to-face with the masked maniac and, on the run for her life, accidentally time travels back to 1987, the year of the original killings. Not only does she have to deal with a serial killer, she’s also forced to navigate an unfamiliar time period. Jamie teams up with her teen mom (Olivia Holt) to take down the killer once and for all, before she’s stuck in the past forever.
2. Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour | October 13th, 2023
And so we’ve arrived at what is most likely going to be the most profitable movie of the year. Not only will Swifties who went for the Eras tour go and see the movie to relive the memories, there’s also the Swifties who didn’t manage to get tickets who will now buy tickets for this movie to finally get to see what they didn’t get to.
Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour is basically what the title suggests, with concert footage as well as behind the scenes stuff. It’s also proof that Taylor Swift is a genius business woman.
3. Killers of the Flower Moon | October 20th, 2023
Scorsese’s latest film stands at 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, with 68 reviews. Chances are, this film has probably been on your most anticipated movies of 2023 list, and in a mere 3 weeks, you’ll get to see it on the big screen. The film is over 3 hours, and will require patience, especially in the first act as Scorsese works to set all the pieces up.
William (Robert De Niro) manipulates his nephew Ernest (Leonardo DiCaprio) into a marriage to a an Osage woman Molly (Lily Gladstone). Then members of her family start dying, and their deaths make Molly and her children with Ernest the sole heirs to her family’s wealth. Mere happenstance, or cold-blooded murder? Scorsese turns the whodunit on its ear.
4. Five Nights at Freddy’s | October 27th, 2023
It started as an indie horror game, and now, it’s being adapted to a movie. The film centers on protagonist Mike Schmidt (Josh Hutcherson), who takes on the role of the nighttime security guard at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, a family entertainment centre with a pizzeria and an indoor amusement park. As Mike settles into his new job, he discovers that the animatronic mascots are in fact alive, and will kill anyone still in the building after midnight. This means Mike will need to defend himself in the gruelling hours between 12am to 6am.
If you’re not looking to go to the cinema for this one, it’s also releasing on Peacock, so get yourself a subscription if you’re a fan of the game.
5. Priscilla | October 27th, 2023
Last year we had Elvis, this year we have Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla. The movie is told from Priscilla Presley’s perspective, about her relationship with Elvis. Given that everyone is so obsessed with Elvis, and Priscilla is often only seen in relation to him, it’s great to get a film that shows her side of things.
The early reviews are raving about the movie, with one reviewer calling it Coppola’s best film since Lost in Translation, which is high praise indeed.
