Single of the Week: Son Lux – ‘You Don’t Know Me’

I think I had a dream like this once, or am I just remembering that time I joined a cult? It’s hard to tell these days. The line between reality and fantasy continues to grow blurrier by the second, and my grasp on either is tenuous at best. Did I ever escape that cult? Has life been an illusion since? Did I ever join? These are the questions and sensations that confronted me upon watching the accompanying video for Son Lux’s ‘You Don’t Know Me’ – our latest Single of the Week.

Now, this could be accounted for by mental health, lifestyle choices, and general state of mind, or it could just be a cool video. Whichever, no matter and never mind, s’all good, man. It is a damn cool video though, and it sits perfectly well with Son Lux’s perfectly tense trip hop, electronica, and pop musical love triangle. Especially so on this track, as ominous atmospherics amp up the on the edge vibes and paranoia, alongside crashing rhythms that manage to seduce as equally as they startle. If there was a track that managed to be both sexy and scary, it’s definitely this one, and the video manages the same.

Though, maybe that says more about me than the video’s sexy/scary dichotomy-in-cahoots.

Anyhow, Son Lux started out as the work of music producer/composer Ryan Lott, and has slowly but surely been embracing more musicians and collaborators, thus morphing Son Lux into something more well rounded and full, something more band like. Having just released their new album Bones, both track and video combine for a powerful statement of intent when it comes to Son Lux, their album, and their music as a whole; apparently perfect for those who like to feel scared and anxious, then entirely confused as to why that seems to have gotten them very much aroused – if I’m to be believed anyway.

Basically, check out this awesome new track, it’s creepily cool music video (featuring the very talented Tatiana Maslany of Orphan Black fame, and Noah Segan from Looper), then follow that up with Son Lux’s brand spanking new album.
