PS4 CMOS Battery Issue Fixed

The technically last-gen console gets a needed bug fix.

PS5 PlayStation 5

An issue with the Playstation 4 CMOS, which affected the console’s internal clock battery, has apparently been fixed in a firmware update.

The issue was only discovered in April of this year. After a few months of inaction, Sony has finally addressed the flaw in the PS4’s system. If left unchecked, the fault in the console battery could cause the internal clock to reset and be unable to track time, which would render both physical and digital games unplayable.

If the console battery dies now, after the firmware update, the PS4 still won’t be able to track time (for example, when trophies are earned), but the PS4 will still be able to recognize and run both digital and disc games.

Thankfully the issue has been resolved, so Playstation players won’t lose all of their games while waiting to score the white whale of a PS5.

A video by Modern Vintage Gamer goes further into depth on the cause of this problem, and the ways that the firmware update corrects it.
