What a performance.

Introduced in Fortnite: Chapter 2 – Season 5, Fortnite’s Performance Mode is intended to help highly competitive players on PC achieve higher framerates and a smoother experience overall by cutting back on some of the smaller details of the game. It’s also great for those whose specs aren’t quite up to snuff, or struggle to run Fortnite. But is Performance Mode also on console?

The answer is no, Fortnite’s Performance Mode is not available on PlayStation, Xbox or Switch, meaning that the performance has to be “as is”. Compared to the PC version, you can’t even lower the graphics in the settings to try and eke out a few more frames.

This is probably quite disappointing to those who prefer performance over fidelity, especially on next-gen consoles. As nice as it is to be able to enjoy the beautiful visuals, there are doubtless plenty of people who’d want higher than 60fps with their new console.

That doesn’t Fortnite’s Performance Mode never will come to console, though. As time goes on and as the PS4, Xbox One, and Switch continue to age, there may come a time when Performance Mode has to go on by default to keep up with all the craziness in Fortnite, especially considering that they will be ten year old hardware in a couple of years’ time. On top of that, once the sheen of a new generation wears off, Epic may add Performance Mode in as an option for more competitive console players.

So, essentially: while Fortnite doesn’t have Performance Mode at this time of writing on console, that doesn’t mean it never will. All that said, if you want better performance and aren’t too worried about how the game looks, if you have a low-spec PC or even just a laptop, there’s always the option to plug it into your TV and the enable Performance Mode.

Fortnite is free-to-play on PC via the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X | S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Android.
