Rockstar Implementing Fan-Made GTA Online Fix, Giving Creator $10k

Not a bad payday, all things considered.

Recently, news broke that a GTA Online player by the name of T0st had managed to solve why the game takes forever to load (on PC anyway), and went about creating his own patch that improved the initial load time of the game considerably. It would appear that Rockstar have taken notice, as the fix is set to go live in-game.

Rockstar Have Noticed The GTA Online Fix?

Rockstar have spoken to PC Gamer to confirm that they’re aware of T0st’s fix, and confirm that the fix does indeed work: “After a thorough investigation, we can confirm that player T0st did, in fact, reveal an aspect of the game code related to load times for the PC version of GTA Online that could be improved. As a result of these investigations, we have made some changes that will be implemented in a forthcoming title update.”

T0st detailed the fix and analysed what the cause of the long-load times were, and while it’s a lengthy, detailed and technical post, the summary is the long load times weren’t due to the demands of the open world and the loading of assets, but the results of mismanaged CPU power. The fix corrects that, resulting in fast load times.

For his efforts, Rockstar have given T0st $10k for finding and fixing the issue as part of their ongoing bug bounty program. Typically, the bug bounty scheme is reserved for finding issues with Rockstar’s cyber-security measures, but given how this fix will improve the experience of GTA Online players on PC, it’s worth the money.
