Amazon Prime just released the official trailer for Coming 2 America, and the royal festivities look as zany as ever.
The Synopsis
Akeem (Eddie Murphy) and his trusted confidante Semmi (Arsenio Hall) are back in Queens, New York. This time, they’re tracking down Akeem’s (who is the newly crowned King) son, in order to make him Akeem’s heir, in order to honour the former King’s dying wish. Akeem and Lisa are still together, and his son is the product of a one-night stand he had before he met her. The problem? Akeem has a daughter, and instead of choosing her as his heir, he is bestowing the title on his son, because women aren’t allowed to lead in Zamunda.
Currently, the plotline does feel like The Princess Diaries 2 coupled with Black Panther (there are even some Wakanda jokes thrown in for good measure), but let’s face it, we won’t be watching Coming 2 America for the plot.
Amazon & Comedies
Amazon bought the movie from Paramount for a whopping US$125 million, probably because they are banking on it being the comedy event of the year. They definitely cinched that spot last year with the release of Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, so it seems that while Netflix dominates on the rom-com front, Amazon wants to deliver on the comedy lane. I guess we’ll see if Amazon’s gamble pays off.
Coming 2 America is released on Amazon Prime March 5, 2021.
