After almost nine months, the best Football Manager series on YouTube has finally come to an end with its 217th episode.

Glory Hunter by DoctorBenjy FM has been a fixture of my daily routine since last November, it providing some kind of structure within the madness of The Event we are all currently experiencing. No matter how long or generally stressful my workday has been, at least there’s been Benjy and his mission to look forward to: collecting every major trophy possible in the world within a strict time limit.

This entails a load of globetrotting, kind of like Indiana Jones but if Short Round was replaced by a screaming Dutchman by the name of Schouten. Benjy goes to clubs in Germany, France, England, Spain, and Italy over the course of the series — and sometimes back again to finish what he bottled.

There are also international competitions, but it’s better to not talk about those.

Glory Hunter created so many stories over its 200+ episode run that are dying to be told here, but they really are better experienced for yourself. From early (and perhaps flukey) success to failures so tragic they belong on a stage, it’s an absolute ride. Benjy manages the impossible on multiple occasions, both in good and bad ways.

For me, though, it’s not the trophies he collects along the way that make Glory Hunter so special, but the players he manages and brings to life. Benjy is a fantastic storyteller, giving an Argentinian superstar a jingle that Syco would be proud of, delighting with the aforementioned shouty boy who loves to declare his own entrance, and Danny Graham. Just Danny Graham. He also makes rivalries feel massive, even if one of those rivalries is with a meal.

It makes sense, trust me.

All of this comes together to create of the most gripping digital soap operas I’ve ever watched, like Eastenders with a harmonica and somehow even more drama. Just like your nan tuning in to watch who Phil Mitchell inconceivably has sex with each week, I watched Glory Hunter almost like a ritual to see what kind of wonderful nonsense Benjy accomplished each weekday. I’m really going to miss it.

Even if you don’t like Football Manager or don’t believe watching dots on a screen could possibly be entertaining, Glory Hunter is a YouTube series that you should absolutely hunt down.
