What if Pac-Man Was Released Today?

When you take a moment to look back at gaming’s humble beginnings, it’s hard not to get misty eyed. Things were so much simpler back then. It’s a topic that I would happily elaborate on, were it not for the fact that doing so would make me sound like a cantankerous old man who still only has a SNES and likes it that way gosh dernit! Also Coca-Cola is too expensive and advertising isn’t racist enough. This video, created by Something Awful found Rich “Lowtax” Kyanka and his cohorts over on the Gaming Garbage YouTube channel, expertly highlights the shortcomings of modern gaming by showing us what Pac-Man might look like if it were made today (albeit with the same graphics).

It’s a somewhat disheartening reminder of just how much interference there is between the player and the game nowadays. Achievement notifications jump up like an excitable terrier, a barrage of loading, updating and installing bars delay the start of the game and in the end there’s a network error and the game crashes. Granted, these pitfalls are the price we pay for mind-boggling graphical fidelity and ingenious gameplay (sometimes), but we can still complain and grumble like the retro-fogies we are.
