It would appear that this year’s Gamescom won’t be going ahead with a physical show, as the German government have prohibited major events from taking place until August 31st as part of their response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
The news, which comes from the German Press Agency via Süddeutsche Zeitung, states the German Prime Minister and Chancellor Angela Merkel has agreed to put a stop to all major events until the end of August. The post only mentions football events specifically, with specific regulations to be made by federal states. That said, Gamescom 2019 managed to pull in around 373k attendees, so it’d be shocking if it didn’t get cancelled.
Gamescom posted an update back in March saying that they’re monitoring the current situation, specifically in regards to the host city Cologne, with further tweets mentioning how they’d make a decision regarding Gamescom switching to a fully digital events in mid-May. Looks like the German government will now force their hand, but the good news is that ticket holders will be reimbursed if the event is cancelled by the Koelnmesse.
