With Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder now officially free agents, having been released from their WWE contracts this past weekend, it’s very likely that we’ll get to see the newly named Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler debuting in several independent promotions once things return to normal. Within hours of WWE’s announcement, The Revival were trending worldwide alongside such iconic indie tag teams as The Young Bucks and LAX. If anything, this goes to show just how much potential is now on the table for some excellent Tag wrestling.

Fans immediately started fantasising feuds for The Revival in AEW, breathing some life back into the simmering rivalry between Dawson, Wilder and The Elite. Their online rivalry started to take hold during The Revival’s top-guy run in NXT, goading fans into giving the two brawlers hell with the now-viral “FTR” slogan. The Revival have also shown keen interest in duking it out with various other tag teams from across the globe. This will surely be the peak of modern tag wrestling, with another very able team now free to compete outside of the mainstream.

With this in mind, let’s run down 5 potential dream matches for The Revival on the independent scene. Make sure you drop your own matches that you’re personally looking forward to in the comments section down below.

1. The Young Bucks

Naturally, The Young Bucks come in as our number one dream feud for The Revival. Matt and Nick Jackson have been the two biggest instigators of the heat between The Revival and The Elite, suggesting that they wouldn’t be able to go the distance with them in a tag classic. There’s no argument that both teams fall into the category of the greatest tag teams on the planet, so seeing them finally matched up against one another would be nothing short of an instant classic.

If the AEW booking team were smart, then they’d try and get this dream match on a pay-per-view card as quickly as they can. As we mentioned, both teams began trending shortly after WWE confirmed the news of their release, if that goes to show anything, it’s that this is a big-money match for AEW. I couldn’t think of two better teams to mesh styles and psychology in a broadway bout.

Tag wrestling often falls into the underappreciated side of pro-wrestling, but with The Young Bucks still managing to pull out the stops in their feuds with The Lucha Brothers and LAX, then a blockbuster tag match with The Revival should help put tag wrestling back on the map.

2. Proud & Powerful (LAX)

Another established attraction of the AEW Tag division is of course The Inner Circle’s Ortiz and Santana, Proud & Powerful. The dynamic duo formerly known as LAX have made a name for themselves across the independent scene as one of the most diverse tag teams in the business today, seeing them match up against The Revival somewhere down the line would probably be the closest to a throwback to Dash and Dawson’s fantastic series against DIY a few years back.

P&P could easily get a great match out of The Revival in one of their first big feuds on the independent scene, however the heel/heel dynamic might not quite get over as much as their respective abilities to create an exciting, traditional tag team match. That is of course if P&P aren’t given a babyface turn after their time under Jericho’s order has come to an end.

Either way, this is one that you should be salivating over. Whether it takes place under AEW’s roof or somewhere like PWG, this would be an absolute barn-burner.

3. Aussie Open

Mark Davis and Kyle Fletcher have become one of the most renowned tag teams on the BritWres scene. Having won various championships across PROGRESS, Revolution Pro and a handful of other British indie promotions, Aussie Open are the quintessential duo to meet The Revival somewhere down the line if the advocates of ‘no flips, just fists’ ever decide to come overseas for a tour.

With ‘Dunkzilla’ Davis currently out with an injury, Fletcher has focused more on his singles career to medium success. These two will naturally come back together to a huge reception and immediately return to their hard-hitting standards of top tag wrestling. Having started to break out in America as well, the Aussies could easily give The Revival a run for their top-guy status when they debut on the indie scene.

4. The G.O.D

New Japan’s Tag division isn’t exactly bursting at the seams with successful teams, but one of the most consistent duos is the former IWGP and ROH Tag Team champions, The Guerrilas of Destiny. Tama Tonga and Tonga Loa have held things down for the Bullet Club since losing Omega, The Bucks and Cody. Despite Jay White’s monumental rise to the top of the card, title gold has been kind of hard to come, but the G.O.D have carved out a legacy for the faction within the tag roster.

The Revival would be a perfect fit for the strong-style inspired wrestling of NJPW, which would of course mean that they’d eventually cross paths with the G.O.D. We believe that this could make for one of the most hard-hitting matches seen from Dawson & Wilder, letting them unload all that frustration in a total brawl against the two Samoans.

Maybe we’ll even see The Revival align themselves with the Bullet Club in spite of their Elite rivals? Who knows.

5. The Briscoe Brothers

The Briscoe Brothers

ROH mainstays Jay and Mark Briscoe have been the unsung heroes of tag team wrestling over the past decade. Their feuds with the Young Bucks, Trent and Chuck Taylor and many more of indie wrestling’s top teams have managed to keep ROH afloat with some stellar, competitive matches. The Revival would match up with The Briscoes to a tee, championing a rough and ready style that could give The Briscoes one of their most high-profile matches to date.

The Briscoes have teetered on being a big deal but never quite managed to go global with their act. I personally believe that a future deal with AEW is on the cards, but for now they’re still managing to generate a small amount of momentum for the ailing ROH brand. However, should Dash and Dawson ever make it to the promotion, then these guys will be first in line to greet them.
