Also getting a non-VR update.

Developer Firesprite Games has today announced that the PS4 exclusive The Persistence will also be coming to the Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC in summer 2020.

Previously a PSVR-only title, The Persistence is a survival horror game with a unique rogue-like twist set aboard a deep space colony starship in the year 2521. Packed with ghouls to take on and an always-shifting labyrinth to stagger around, it’s gone down as something of a cult favourite.

Those who already own the PSVR version of the game will get the update to play The Persistence “normally” for free; PC players will get Oculus support for the VR version, based on the trailer. It will be available physically and digitally on console.

Here’s the announcement trailer:

Graeme Ankers, MD and Co-founder of Firesprite Games, on the announcement:

“We’re excited and very much looking forward to bringing this game and universe we have created to new platforms for players. The Persistence is a survival-horror experience designed to keep players on edge from start to finish, and with a procedurally generated environment forming around them, no two playthroughs are ever identical, meaning you will never find safety or security in the same place.”

There’s an interesting little side story to this reveal. Firesprite was founded by former members of SCE Studio Liverpool, previously known as Psygnosis. Releasing many WipeOut and Formula One games during their time under Sony’s umbrella, Sony closed SCE Studio Liverpool on August 22nd, 2012. They would later join back up with Sony as the reformed Firesprite to develop The Playroom and its VR counterpart, as well as Air Force Special Ops: Nightfall for PSVR and Run Sackboy! Run! for *sniff* Vita.

Having played The Persistence in VR and loving it, I am pretty intrigued to see how it stacks up as a “regular” experience. With Firesprite promising “enhanced environments and post-processing effects” as well a new UI and controls, it’s definitely something to keep an eye on.

The Persistence will release on PS4 (again), Xbox One, Switch and PC this summer, no exact date just yet.
