Monster Hunter World: Iceborne is finally live on PC, and many fans have jumped straight into the game to experience new areas, monsters and items, but unfortunately, a nasty little issue has emerged that’s deleting entire save files.
As with most games, Iceborne performs a save file check upon booting up the game, but some players are reporting that upon doing so, they’re receiving the error message “no compatible save was found”. If you continue on from this point, the old save data is deleted and a new one is created. Apparently, having cloud saves enabled also means that the new save will overwrite the old one when you exit the game.
The cause of this problem is unknown currently, with the two prevailing theories being that it’s either due to out of date mods, or it’s affecting players who haven’t played Monster Hunter World in a while. A post-launch patch for the base game switched the save data format, so because Iceborne can’t read the old save data format, it’s prompting players to start a new save.
If you’ve picked up Iceborne on PC but haven’t launched the game, it’d be wise to back up your local saves, which can normally be found under Steam\User data\(your steam user ID number)\582010 (thanks VG24/7). Keeping hold of that original save should help you if you need to perform a save transfer.
