Star Trek: Picard Spinoff Name Revealed

What's in a name? In this case, the beloved character who serves as the main draw of the upcoming show.

Picard

Star Trek’s upcoming Picard spinoff has revealed its official name – the no-nonsense Star Trek: Picard. Say what you like, but you have to admit it’s accurate. The reveal came at a recent CBS and CBS All Access Upfronts presentation, alongside what appears to be the first image of Sir Patrick Stewart reprising the role.

Although details are still thin on the ground, it’s been confirmed that Stewart will be starring alongside Santiago Cabrera (Heroes), Michelle Hurd (Daredevil), and Evan Evagora (the upcoming Fantasy Island), with Hanelle Culpepper and Jonathan ‘Riker’ Frakes lined up to direct.

Commenting on his return to the role when it was first announced last year, Stewart said “I will always be very proud to have been a part of the Star Trek: The Next Generation, but when we wrapped that final movie in the spring of 2002, I truly felt my time with Star Trek had run its natural course. It is, therefore, an unexpected but delightful surprise to find myself excited and invigorated to be returning to Jean-Luc Picard and to explore new dimensions within him. Seeking out new life for him, when I thought that life was over.”

The title confirms what the press has, from the beginning, revolved around: the main event here is Stewart reprising the role of Picard. And why not? He’s always been cited in the two-man race for best Star Trek captain, even if William Shatner’s Kirk is far more ripe for parody. Still, sight unseen this does give it the feel of a fairly shameless star vehicle, particularly coming in a franchise which hasn’t been shy about returning to the well of old material, plotlines, and characters (see: the film reboots, and the recent Discovery desperately cramming in any reference to the original series it possibly can).
