9 Reasons Why Daenerys is Unfit For the Iron Throne

Daenerys sucks at her job

5. Her Lack of Accountability

Others have been seriously injured or crippled because of their missteps. Not that injury would be in order, but that she seems completely removed from the consequences of her actions. No one ever tells her she was wrong to do what she did, probably because they don’t want to end up as dragon chow.

If she had more invested in the goings on, maybe she’d be less inclined to threaten people as her opening tactic. She’d be more willing to negotiate and engage in diplomacy if she felt the losses of her dead soldiers. Oh and those cities that she conquered? Qarth, Yunkai, Slaver’s Bay? Yeah she left them destitute and in the books they’ve been retaken by slavers, or in one case the slaves have reversed the roles on their former masters. She did a great job there uprooting all those people from their homes leaving them with no choice but to join her army or starve in the ruins of the economy she destroyed.

6. Her “Justice” Comes Without Trial

When Ser Barristan bit it in an alley fighting the resistance group “Sons of the Harpy,” Daenerys swore to punish those responsible. She gathered all the heads of families that were still alive after her conquest and stood them in the pit where she keeps her 2 dragons that didn’t run away. Without investigating, without calling witnesses or any such preamble, she fed one of the former masters to her dragons, all while claiming to not care if they were innocent or not.

Also when a former slave killed a prisoner that Dany intended to try in court, she executed him with great ceremony, but no trial. The people called for mercy, and a trial might have convinced them that he had been given a fair shake, or that the punishment was just, or they might have come to some other punishment. In summarily killing the former slave she showed the people that she was the same as the masters they overthrew for her; one who simply kills those that disobey.

7. She Thinks She’s Perfect

This is evidenced by the fact that she listens to no one, even her advisors. People often mistake this kind of arrogance as confidence, but in reality this kind of thought process is toxic to the relationship between leaders and subordinates. The number one reason employees report hating their jobs is because of a manager that they feel won’t hear their voices.

Considering what we know about employees that hate their jobs, she’d do well to slow down and actually listen to her people. A full third of all bankruptcies are attributed to disgruntled employees stealing from work. In our world, angry employees can lead to losing your business; in Westeros, an angry subject can lead to losing your head.

8. She can’t control her dragons

Drogon is not happy

I’m not entirely sure how you lose a pet the size of a whale, but Dany managed it. Oh, he came back just in time to save her from The Sons of The Harpy ambush ala dragon ex machina. She just let them run free in the wild, and kept them by her side with wishes and bubblegum. In our world, losing a dragon is the equivalent of losing a nuke, with teeth, that can fly autonomously and needs to kill to survive. One would figure that she’d keep a better track of something that you feed whole sheep to.

She claims to be the mother of dragons, but other than learning they like cooked prey, we don’t see her doing any mothering in the show OR the books. There are those that say that they can’t truly be tamed, but then again her family kept them as pets and even rode them into battle. Why doesn’t she ever seek the knowledge of a maester or search for books on how to raise dragons? It doesn’t even seem like she consults legends or the songs in trying to control her dragons. She is fully aware of their capacity as weapons of war as evidenced by her constant threats.  A weapon wielded carelessly is even more dangerous than the most insane tyrant.

9. Her Flightiness (Literally)

Danerys is sick of your shit

As previously mentioned, at this point in the story Dany’s forces are fighting the Sons of the Harpy, a resistance group determined to oust her from her throne. It seems strange then that we’ve never heard of such a group in any of the other cities that she has conquered. When you think about it though, it’s not strange at all. She’s never been there for the aftermath of the conquest.

Every city before Meereen has been raided and sacked, leaving burnt out shells in her wake. The people hadn’t had time to gather forces and resources to retaliate against the marauding queen. These cities are doomed to collapse without an alternative economy and no leaders. In fact, there will be multiple factions vying for control of the freed cities that will lead to more death and destruction.

Then in the books she randomly decides to just take off on the back of Drogon who came back to Meereen to roast some fools. Her soldiers and advisers are in the middle of fighting a civil war with the locals, and she decides it’s ok to just take a vacation where no one knows if she’s alive or dead for MONTHS. There are those who defend her and say she’s young and naïve. If anything, that just further underlines her inability to rule. She shouldn’t be given a random city to practice on.

My money’s on Jon Snow to win the throne with his wildling army. Also another good point is the fact that so far, Jon hasn’t threatened to feed anyone to a dragon.
