6 Upcoming PlayStation VR Games to Get Excited About

Bravo Team PS VR

With the PS VR released a year ago, many games have come out already. Some were more successful, some less, some mediocre, some highly enjoyable, but overall it wasn’t a bad launch year. Here are six games to look forward to in the future of PS VR.

The Inpatient

Developer: Supermassive Games
Release Date: 21/11/2017

The second venture into the world of Until Dawn in VR, and a prequel to the original game, The Inpatient places you into the shoes of an amnesiac inpatient at Blackwood Sanatorium as you try to find out who you are and what you’re doing there. Moving away from the fast-paced rail shooter gameplay of Rush of Blood, The Inpatient seems to be a return to roots for the series, as previews boast a branching narrative with different endings, and choices that impact the game.

Although not much else is known about the game, Supermassive has experience with VR and the interactive movie genre now, so it is not too farfetched to believe that the newest game in the series will be a delight to play, if a bit scary, even if it promises to not just be about the scares, although the teaser seems to be telling a very different story, showcasing jump scare after jump scare after jump scare.

The Inpatient will be exclusive to PS VR.

Moss

Developer: Polyarc, Inc.
Release Date: TBA 2017

Being a fantasy adventure game about a cute mouse wielding a sword, Moss already has high expectations on its shoulders. The game follows the adventures of Quill as she tries to save her uncle from the distant evil quickly approaching. It’s a third person game where you solve puzzles and fight enemies together with Quill, removing obstacles and influencing the world to clear her way.

Promising rich lore and intriguing characters, it could easily be one of the best games for the headset if done properly, using the third person formula that often doesn’t work for VR and turning it to its own advantage by having you play as a separate character assisting Quill through all of her adventures instead of having static cameras watching every move while you normally move around in third person. Hopefully, this will be a successful and the least vomit-inducing use of third person in VR. The game will, however, be controlled with the Dualshock controller but will require the use of motion gestures for added controls, which will be done via the light bar.

Moss will be exclusive to PS VR, although no release date is confirmed yet.

DOOM VFR

Developer: id Software
Release Date: 1/12/2017

Judging by the brutally fast-paced gameplay of the newest DOOM instalment, most wouldn’t have expected a VR spinoff. There’s a thin line between enjoyable fast-paced and vomit-inducing, and DOOM VFR hopefully won’t cross it. It places you in the shoes of the last survivor of the UAC’s Martian research facility as you die and are then placed into an artificial brain matrix to restore the stability of the operation and kill as many demons as possible.

Already sounding very Doom-like, the game promises to show the world of DOOM from a completely new perspective as you get as up close and personal as you can with demons before you tear them to shreds as you fight the demon invasion, maintain order and prevent catastrophic failure at the Mars facility, solving puzzles and slaughtering enemies. DOOM VFR will probably be a mixture of many things, but it will definitely not be boring, no matter how dizzy you get. Most likely it will end up an essential, but if 2016 has taught us anything, it’s to not get our hopes up too high for VR.

DOOM VFR will be available on PS VR and HTC Vive.

Bravo Team

Developer: Supermassive Games
Release Date: 5/12/2017

Supermassive Games have had their hands full with VR, working on both this and The Inpatient. Bravo Team is a first-person shooter game playable in either single-player or online two player co-op, although the importance of teamwork in the game is often underlined. The game places you in a fictional modern day Eastern European city as the President of the country is assassinated, leaving you in a tough spot, struggling to survive as you try to dodge and jump with ease in VR just like you do with a keyboard and mouse, making split-second decisions.

This fast-paced first person shooter might be comparable with a more stationary, single-player or co-op PvE version of something like CS:GO, with a somewhat similar style and a similar focus on fast-paced, realistic shooting action. Wrong decisions will cost you the game, and a failure to decide will, too.

Bravo Team will be exclusive to PS VR.

Monster of the Deep: Final Fantasy XV

Developers: Square Enix LTD
Release Date: 21/11/2017

This entry is mainly on the list because of the sheer ridiculousness of the title. The first VR game by Square Enix is set in the world of Final Fantasy XV as you take part in fishing in various ponds, trying to hunt and catch several fish. The titular “monster of the deep” can end the game by attacking you, and the point of the game is for you to try to catch it. The game was developed in favour of VR-based main game content, as that would’ve required players to wear a VR headset for hours, something Square Enix decided against.

Monster of the Deep: Final Fantasy XV will be exclusive to PS VR.

Skyrim VR

Developers: Bethesda Softworks
Release Date: 11/2017

Say what you will about the fifth entry in the Elder Scrolls series and its countless rereleases, the most recent of which being for the Nintendo Switch, but Skyrim has since its release had VR potential. Although there is a chance of the game causing fatigue in VR, the two-hand gameplay as you make your way through the icy world filled with dragons and magic is perfect for the PS Move controllers, letting you zap anyone you want to, whenever you want to, provided you have enough mana. Unless you take the path of the sword, in which case you can slash your way through Skyrim, or a bow and arrow if you wish to take a sneakier path.

Skyrim VR will be a timed VR exclusive.
