Ah, May. Spring is in the air, with the promise of a sultry summer just around the corner. The world is alight with life and laughter, children play merrily in the fields and birds sing their sweet songs from atop the treetops.

What a great time to stay inside and play video games! Here’s five of the biggest releases for this month:

Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia

Developer: Intelligent Systems
Publisher: Nintendo
Platforms: Nintendo 3DS

Continuing the Fire Emblem saga is Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, a game which looks promising, even if does take a good while to say its full title.

Available from May 19th for Nintendo 3DS, Shadows of Valentia is a tactical RPG where you control two armies which are warring on either side of Valentia. Both Casual and Classic mode are back this time around, dictating whether or not you can revive your fallen units at the end of battle. Whilst Shadows is only available on 3DS, Fire Emblem Warriors will be coming to Nintendo Switch sometime soon.

PREY

Developer: Arkane Studios
Publisher: Bethesda Softworks
Platforms: PC (Windows), Playstation 4, Xbox One

Set to release on the 5th of May, Prey is a game which has sparked a fair amount of hype surrounding its upcoming release. The developers have revealed plans for future DLC already, though opinions on the game’s first hour of play have been decidedly mixed.

The game’s been compared to Bioshock, Fallout and more, but we won’t know quite how to feel about Prey until later on this week.

The trophy list was also recently revealed, so now we know we’ll need multiple playthroughs to earn every one.

INJUSTICE 2

Developer: NetherRealm Studios
Publisher: Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment
Platforms: Android, iOS, Playstation 4, Xbox One

If you’re someone who enjoys seeing superheroes beat up other superheroes for your entertainment, then you’re probably pretty stoked about Injustice 2.

Coming to mobile platforms on May 11th, and on consoles from May 16th, Injustice 2 will feature lots of the elements familiar to players from Injustice: Gods Among Us, but is also shaking things up with a new loot-drop system and a new “Multiverse mode”. There’s also going to be some microtransactions this time around, to help you purchase new cosmetic items for your characters.

RIME

Developer: Tequila Works
Publisher: Grey Box, Six Foot
Platforms: Playstation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC (Windows)

Described by most as a mix between Zelda, The Last Guardian and Okami, Rime is an upcoming adventure/puzzle game, developed by Tequila Works.

Due for release from May 26th 2017, Rime is a highly anticipated game which has had an interesting development history. Originally the rights to the game were owned by Sony (the game was shown off during the indie games section of Sony’s conference at the 2013 gamescom) but Tequila Works purchased the rights last year, and have been working on the game ever since. One to watch out for this month if you’ve completed Breath of the Wild a whole bunch of times by now.

DON’T STARVE: MEGA PACK

Developer: Klei Entertainment, Capybara Games
Publisher: Klei Entertainment
Platforms: Playstation 4, Xbox One, PC (Windows)

Due for release from May 30th, the Don’t Starve Mega Pack is a bundle which consists of the original Don’t Starve, as well as Don’t Starve Together, Reign of Giants and Don’t Starve: Shipwrecked.

Available for pre-order now, the bundle is a good way to introduce people to the game who haven’t yet taken the plunge with a franchise that our own Editor-in-Chief described as one of the best indie games of the 21st century.
