10 of the Most Memorable Football Moments of 2014

Lionel Messi wins

5. Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi Break Records

What can be said about these men, their goalscoring ratios are incredible and their talent is out of this world. This year alone, between them they broke records like there was no tomorrow. Fastest player to 200 goals in the Spanish league (Ronaldo), most hat tricks in the Spanish league (Ronaldo), all time champions league goalscoring record (Messi) and all time Spanish league top scorer (Messi). Absolutely unbelievable stats, it’s like they’re just trading records at the moment.

4. Goal of The Season Nominations

The Fifa goal of the season choice is especially hard this year, with three absolutely stunning strikes up for the award this year, including one from hitherto unknown Irish women’s footballer Stephanie Roche.

3. Luis Suarez Controversy

THE controversial moment of the year from that man again, the eternally hungry Luis Suarez. His inexplicable bite on Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini, and subsequent ludicrous defence “I lost my balance and fell on his shoulder”, earned the Uruguayan a 4 month ban from football and a 9 match international ban (subsequently lessened to allow him to train and play friendlies during the spell.)

2. Top Notch American Goalkeeping

During a summer where the Americans suddenly developed a massive love for football, or ‘soccer’ as they call it, Tim Howard, their national team’s goalkeeper, set a massive record during a world cup knockout match against Belgium. He made 16 saves during the course of a match, the most since records began in 1966. Unfortunately they went on to narrowly lose the game 2-1 but the record was the major talking point. In standard internet form, many fantastic memes popped up around the Internet after this monumental achievement.

1. Brazil 1-7 Germany

An absolutely incredible match, with a scoreline that nobody could ever predict. In a game that was supposed to be a party in Brazil’s backyard turned in to a nightmare for them as the Germans arrived to steamroller them with devastating efficiency. As I remarked at the time, “Germany are just playing like they’re that kid at another kid’s birthday party who’s winning all the games and telling embarrassing stories, but they don’t care ’cause the other kid once broke their computer and gave them a wedgie on their 10th birthday.”

So there you have it, ten of my top moments that happened in the world of football this calendar year. If you have any which you think I may have left out, do feel free to comment.
