Did your favourite TV show just get dropped like a stone? Every May, the major TV networks do their spring cleaning, and this time they’re dumping some big names. Marvel’s Agent Carter will not return, while The Muppets’ recent TV outing will now go down in history as a failed experiment.
Agent Carter, which followed Captain America’s love interest Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell from Captain America: The First Avenger), managed two seasons on ABC but has struggled for ratings throughout. Another Marvel TV spin-off, Marvel’s Most Wanted, will now no longer go ahead. Cue premature declarations that the superhero bubble has burst.
Meanwhile Kermit and Miss Piggy have also been chucked in the proverbial dumpster. The Muppets, which moved the comedy puppets to the back stage of a late night talk show, was a hot prospect last season. Poor critical reaction and a steady dip in viewer ratings, however, mean it will not be returning next season.
Finally, the long running crime procedural Castle will not be back for a ninth season. The light-hearted cop show saw Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) and Rick Castle (Nathan Fillion) solve crimes while slowly dealing with their obvious sexual tension. Efforts to salvage a ninth season last month saw ABC planning to jettison the show’s two biggest female characters. Naturally, the internet told ABC to shut the hell up with that kind of nonsense, and it seems to have worked. Castle will not be returning, which is probably a good move at this point.
If you’re bummed about any of these cancellations, don’t worry. Very soon the internet will be choking on a whole load of new trailers for shows starting in September.
