Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – How To Remove Sludge

Sludge is one of the many side effects of the Upheaval in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, though it’s not nearly as annoying as Gloom. Sludge will effectively slow you down when you walk through it and also block you from accessing things like Skyview Towers to help you fill out your map.

You can remove Sludge in TOTK by using water. There are two main ways of using water in the game, the first is to get your hands on some Splash Fruit.

Splash Fruit is a material with many uses, as it can be eaten for health, cooked to help you swim faster, or struck to explode and splash water, helping you to clear Sludge.

A few players will likely encounter Bazz, a Zora stuck in the Sludge near Upland Zorana Skyview Tower, which you will also need to de-sludge. You can find some Splash Fruit just up the hill from Bazz hanging from a tree, as well as just generally all over Hyrule.

Press +, go to Materials, find your Splash Fruit, hold it, then drop it on the Sludge covering Bazz. Strike it and then the fruit should splash, freeing Bazz, who will give you a Zora spear for your trouble.

The second, much less economic way of clearing Sludge in TOTK is to get your hands on a Hydrant Zonai Device. As you might guess, these basically shoot out water and can clear Sludge much quicker than Splash Fruit, but are far less easy to come across. You can find them at some Device Dispensers; we’ll update this when we know which ones for sure. You will also need to have enough Zonai Energy.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is available now on Switch.
