YouTube Wrestling Channels Penalised By Advertising Changes

Blampied

It looks like it is a bad time for wrestling on the interwebs, as PWPonderings have reported.

Recently, YouTube have been under fire for some of their site’s content (un-PG, hate speech, general unsavoury footage etc.), which led to a whole host of advertisers pulling their ads from the website.

Despite Google downplaying the issue, YouTube have been implementing many changes to what criteria videos have to meet to make any money.

One of these changes was their ‘Restricted Mode’ – basically a control system which filters out any content that may be deemed as ‘objectionable’.

As a result, YouTube channels that post wrestling content have all largely been affected, and are losing their revenue.

Not only will if affects the likes of WWE (whose videos regularly hit hundreds of thousands of views, even millions) but TNA, ROH and countless other smaller and/or independent promotions worldwide who utilise the platform to share their content and boost their brand.

It goes without saying that YouTube wrestling channels like WhatCulture will almost certainly be affected by this Restricted Mode blow.

Other companies such as Beyond Wrestling and AIW have already released statements on the subject, mentioning how hundreds of extra DVD/MP4s a month would need to be sold to make up for the loss in revenue that YouTube would once provide.

The Wrestling Observer said:

“…almost all wrestling channels will be losing virtually all ad revenue, which in cases of companies that pushed product consumption on YouTube as a significant part of their business plan, that’s a major hit.”
