Yaybahar: Instrument of the Future

Ladies and gentleman, let me introduce you to your new favourite instrument; the Yaybahar.

The creation of musician Görkem Şen, the Yaybhar just goes to show that new instruments are still being invented and that there is an untapped potential in acoustic instruments yet to be explored, and if you’ve played the video, heard the instrument in action and been somewhat confused by the look of it, I will confirm again – it is an acoustic instrument.

Despite the fact the noises emitting from the Yaybahar sound sort of like a space whale’s sex noises, if it was having sex with a spaceship it confused for a mate whilst falling slow motion into India and the black hole of Calcutta turned out to be a real black hole, the instrument is just ‘natural source coded materials which are membrane, coiled spring and string working together. Maybe we can say that this is a new bridge system between string and resonant body,’ according to the video’s director Olgu Demir.

Disco’s dead. Punk’s dead. Guitar music’s dead (it’s really not!). Electronic music’s dead (not even close!). The future is the sound of space whale sex-ships! Long live the Yaybahar! Hail!
