10 WWE Superstars Who Need To Be In WWE 2K Battlegrounds

We narrow down what feels like a billion superstars to just ten.

With WWE 2K Battlegrounds scheduled to replace 2K21 in the fall of 2020, we naturally turn our thoughts towards which current WWE superstars we might see featured on the game’s roster. The brief teaser offered us a slight glimpse into the game’s inter-generational theme, with the likes of John Cena and The Rock renewing their storied feud and Becky Lynch trading shots with Charlotte Flair. It seems to be 2K’s mission objective to bring forward the very best of the best for the beat-em-up spectacular.

With such a wide range of WWE superstars on offer, it’s hard to narrow down a potential roster to just ten, but as proven in the 2011 hit WWE All Stars, unfortunately not all active competitors can make the cut. In this list, we run down 10 superstars that we believe need to be in WWE 2K Battlegrounds, bringing in current champions as performers who you could imagine soaring high in the air or delivering a knockout punch that could send their opponents through brick walls.

1. Brock Lesnar

Arguably the biggest blockbuster attraction in pro wrestling today, ‘The Beast Incarnate’ Brock Lesnar has become top of WWE’s food chain, having conquered pretty much everyone that the main roster has to offer since returning in 2012. Whether you love him or hate him, you have to admit there’s a part of you that enjoys watching Brock go to work on an opponent, tossing them around the ring with a devastating barrage of suplexes and his vicious F5.

If anyone could fit in with the over-the-top world of WWE 2K Battlegrounds, then it’s ‘The Beast’. We can only imagine how hilarious it will be to launch your friends across the ring in the middle of Suplex City itself. Brock has such an explosive move-set that will transition perfectly into the comic world of Battlegrounds, we also think his tiny head will look great on a set of oversized pecs.

2. Braun Strowman

Another superstar that could easily fit into the world of giants and monsters, Braun Strowman is quite literally a real life creature-feature and we can’t think of anyone better to step into WWE 2K Battlegrounds. Currently hanging onto the Universal Championship on SmackDown Live, Strowman has become one of the most dependable main-eventers of the modern era, having got over with the WWE Universe in a big way thanks to his destructive antics backstage.

Braun’s ability to toss his rivals about the squared circle is something that could easily be brought into the fantasy realm. I can already see Strowman lifting his opponent high in the air to obliterate them with a crushing powerslam, or squeezing the life out of them with his standing triangle choke. There’s no better big man in the industry today to make the transition into 2K Battlegrounds than Strowman himself.

3. ‘The Fiend’ Bray Wyatt

‘The Fiend’ has quickly become one of WWE’s top stars, already being marketed on almost every piece of WWE merchandise possible. It’s great to see a more sinister character becoming a big deal in the company, after so long of seeing cookie-cutter superheroes taking the reins. Of course, 2K Battlegrounds will be the perfect place for Bray Wyatt’s monster to wreak havoc and dominate both mentally and physically.

Should 2K Battlegrounds take the fight outside of the typical squared circle, then perhaps ‘The Fiend’ will be able to revive his popular Firefly Funhouse match from WrestleMania as part of the new game. With the game focusing on ‘fun’ and the absurdity that comes with pro-wrestling, then Wyatt’s wacky world would naturally be a part of that.

4. Roman Reigns

‘The Big Dog’ might be taking a little time-off during the pandemic, but that hasn’t taken away from his status as the top guy in WWE. Roman Reigns is of course going to be included in the 2K Battlegrounds roster, having certified himself as the gold standard of what it means to be a superstar in today’s day and age. But outside of his star power, Reigns is one of the most explosive superstars in the business today, delivering heavy strikes and an insane spear.

Reigns is certainly going to crush opponents in 2K Battlegrounds, bringing the big fight to his yard to tick off a few more dream matches with wrestlers of past and present. We imagine that Roman Reigns will be the first featured in the next round of roster reveals.

5. AJ Styles

‘The Phenomenal One’ AJ Styles has carved out quite the legacy for himself in WWE, solidifying himself as one of their top guys, culminating with a show-stealing dream match against The Undertaker at this year’s WrestleMania. Of course, 2K Battlegrounds will be the perfect place for AJ to show off some of his high-flying specialities, alongside the likes of Rey Mysterio, Jeff Hardy and Kofi Kingston.

We definitely see Styles soaring around the ring with his patented Phenomenal Forearm and other innovations on the death-defying moves we see each week. AJ has certainly deserved to be considered one of the, if not the best on the main roster today and I can’t wait to see what we could do with AJ Styles in 2K Battlegrounds. Perhaps the clash of styles between AJ himself and one of the bigger beasts of the roster couldn’t be more fun to watch than in WWE 2K’s new project.

6. Randy Orton

Three letters, RKO.

When Randy Orton made his All Stars debut, one of the most thrilling features of the game was delivering his signature finishing move in all sorts of situations. THQ really captured the excitement of a classic RKO out of nowhere, with opponents flying around the ring only to be caught with the devastating cutter. I hope we get to see the same innovation in 2K Battlegrounds.

Orton has become a modern-day legend, achieving everything there is in WWE and forging a Hall of Fame worthy career. ‘The Viper’ will of course find himself included on the roster of superstars chosen to represent the current era in the upcoming game, what better superstar and what better finishing move to take the fight to the old guard?

7. Finn Balor

There’s no doubt that the NXT roster should also find a home in WWE 2K Battlegrounds, whether that be on the game’s base roster or as part of a special DLC somewhere down the line. If anyone should lead the charge for the black and gold brand, then it should be ‘The Prince’ Finn Balor. Balor of course has a flair for the macabre and the unknown with his demon persona, something that will be an easy sell for the fantasy world of 2K Battlegrounds.

If WWE 2K20’s Bump in the Night DLC is anything to go by, then 2K consider ‘The Demon King’ to be an easy character to place into different worlds and turn him into one of the most powerful wrestlers on the roster. If 2K Battlegrounds happen to stop by hell for a fight or two, then we definitely see Finn Balor sitting atop of a demonic throne, Shao Khan style.

8. Daniel Bryan

Daniel Bryan

The superstar powered by the Yes Movement, Daniel Bryan might be one of the more unlikely stars to appear in the over-emphasised world of 2K Battlegrounds, but nevertheless, we think he deserves a place on the roster. Daniel Bryan remains one of the most popular superstars on the roster day and might be able to bring in his underdog nature to clash with the giants and monsters.

Maybe 2K could exaggerate the technical style and make similar superstars like Adam Cole, Seth Rollins, Pete Dunne and Johnny Gargano some of the more difficult characters to pick up and play, allowing for veteran fighting gamers something to sink their teeth into with different stances and combos that could make online play something of a marvel to watch.

9. Rhea Ripley

‘The Nightmare’ Rhea Ripley has soared through the ranks of NXT and even made her WrestleMania debut in a losing effort against Charlotte Flair. Despite being knocked off of her pedestal by ‘The Queen’, Ripley has become one of the more unique female competitors in WWE and could easily become one of the first NXT Women to find herself included in the new game.

Ripley’s style is very similar to that of a brawler, much like Lesnar, she could batter her opponents silly and launch them about the ring with her incredible strength. Perhaps Ripley can finally get her win back over Charlotte Flair in Battlegrounds this year?

10. WALTER

Walter with UK title

NXT UK’s WALTER might not be the first in line for a slot on the 2K Battlegrounds roster, but if anyone from the BritWres brand stands out as one of the most monstrous beings under the WWE umbrella, then it’s him. WALTER has what it takes to manhandle opponents and slam them right through the ring with his impactful powerbomb. We think an oversized WALTER would be an excellent addition to the already stacked roster.

WALTER is more likely than not to be featured as a DLC competitor, having missed the cut for WWE 2K20 and kept far from sight in subsequent DLC packages. We know fans of NXT UK are begging to get their hands on their champ, if only to turn him into the most dominant superstar on the main roster. Maybe they can finally get the job done with 2K Battlegrounds.
