Suda51 And Swery

Iconic developers Suda51 (No More Heroes, Killer7, Shadows of the Damned) and Swery (Dark Dreams Don’t Die, The Good Life, Deadly Premonition) held a livestream recently over at IGN Japan, where the two brainstormed ideas, settling on developing an indie horror experience called Hotel Barcelona.

The session was strictly informal, with a translator on hand to remind audiences that all information shared wasn’t final, but some interesting details emerged, such as the fact that they’ve been given a $1 million budget to work on the game. There was also the small nugget that Devolver Digital would be publishing Hotel Barcelona, though that’s since been clarified to state that the two developers have spoken to Devolver, but nothing has come of it just yet. That said, Devolver seem keen.

The two absolute madlads also texted Keiichiro Toyama, the creator of Silent Hill and Siren, live on stream in order to get him involved with their project, and he apparently said yes. Swery also took to Twitter after the event to state that composer Jukio Kallio is interested in making music for Hotel Barcelona. Jukio’s musical credits include Celeste, Minit and Bleed 2, so there’s plenty of talent signed up to work on this mysterious project.

As for details regarding what Hotel Barcelona will be about, Suda and Swery remarked that they’d like the game to be “light and easy-to-play”, suggesting either a mobile, Stadia or Nintendo Switch release. Other aspects included a discussion about whether or not to make the game a straight-up horror title or like a thriller, akin to a David Lynch movie.

You can catch up on the broadcast by watching the video below. Suda and Swery will also be hosting another brainstorming session next week, so hopefully we’ll get more details about their Hotel Barcelona project. Honestly, we still have no real idea what they’re up to, but this is certainly a novel and engaging approach to developing their game. We’ll be keeping an eye on this one.
