This Week In TV: Lethal Weapon, Sherlock, Haywire

Sherlock, BBC
Sherlock

Welcome back sexy people, to the second instalment of This Week in TV. May I say how clever and good looking you are for coming back for week two? Is that a new haircut? It looks great anyway.

So, anyway, television. It’s been a trailerific week, with more than one show getting a spanking new trailer for you all to hyperventilate over. First though, here’s Jimmy Fallon challenging people to show him their Google search history on their phones:

TV News

Lethal Weapon

So Mel Gibson must be pissed right? First Mad Max gets taken away from him, now Lethal Weapon is becoming a TV show with an all new cast. Gibson and Danny Glover are apparently too old for this shit, as every TV new website on the internet has hilariously pointed out.

The news is that Warner Bros. Television pitched the show to a bunch of networks, and Fox ordered a pilot. Matt Miller, a writer on comedy-drama Chuck, will write and executive produce the show which will keep the buddy cop relationship of LA detectives Riggs and Murtaugh.

It sounds a lot like another TV procedural, and the fact it’s based on a classic movie series will leave a lot of us feeling worn out. So many movie-to-TV projects are happening right now it’s easy to start feeling cynical. For my money this show only works if they can find two leads with as much chemistry as Gibson and Glover had. Not an easy task.

Sleepy Hollow vs. Bones

Back in July Fox announced two of its biggest mystery-of-the-week shows would be doing a cross over. No big deal. Except Bones is about a medical examiner who solves murders with science and Sleepy Hollow has an undead headless horseman amongst its recurring cast.

The cross over has been set for October 21st, with the two shows airing back to back. As the date might suggest the double episode will have a Halloween theme, which fits more with Sleepy Hollow’s tone than that of Bones.

Sorry to keep harping on about this, but Bones is basically CSI-lite. How will medical examiner Bones react to meeting Sleepy Hollow’s Ichobod Crane, a man who spent more than 230 years in a coffin without ageing? I think one show here is about to jump the shark.

Amazon TV

Omniscient internet giant Amazon is already a small player in the TV world with its Prime Instant Video streaming service. Now though, it looks like the company is following Apple’s lead with plans for a live online TV service.

This is in its super early stages, but it looks like customers would pay a subscription fee to access a bundle of channels through their internet connection. Amazon have already been in touch with CBS Corp and NBC owners Comcast about including their channels, according to Bloomberg.

Apple have been working on a similar service for a while, which is currently set to launch early next year. Should we all start worrying that our bandwidth is about to be clogged up?

Sherlock

The Sherlock Christmas special has its first full length trailer. It seems like the writers are fully committing to this 19th century vibe. Fanfic writers, listen out for the moment Sherlock says “oohh Watson”:

MacGyver

The 80s TV hit about a guy who can basically fix anything with a couple of thumb tacks and a plastic straw is getting a small screen reboot. The show would focus on Macgyver’s early years and could star former Smallville actor Justin Hartley.

Vinyl

HBO’s show about the 70s New York rock scene gave us a trailer this week. With names like Martin Scorsese, Mick Jagger and Wolf of Wall Street writer Terence Winter attached Vinyl already has a lot of prestige. The show airs in January.

Marvel

The slow, creeping rise of the Marvel marketing machine continues. This week not only did fans get yet another Jessica Jones trailer, but Marvel also announced the development of a sitcom called Damage Control. The show will revolve around characters charged with cleaning up after the Avengers and other superhero battles. Too far?

Haywire

Can you see a pattern emerging here? Haywire was a 2011 action flick staring former MMA fighter Gina Carano and Channing Tatum. Now it’s being developed into a TV show. If Carano can be lured back to the show it might have potential, otherwise it just makes us very, very tired.

Doctor Who

We’re apparently getting a Doctor Who spin-off. Class will be set at Coal Hill School, where the Doctor’s current travelling companion Clara Oswald teaches. Young Adult writer Patrick Ness will pen the series which will air in 2016.
