There’s a British vibe to This Week in TV today, with two of our three main stories focusing on British telly. There’s a new trailer for Supergirl though, so scroll down for that. We haven’t even seen the first episode of it over here in the UK, so consider yourselves lucky if you’re across the pond.
Before we get to the stories of the week, here’s our favourite late night video of the week. This one was actually filmed late at night, as James Corden and the crew of Ghost Adventurers explore CBS studios for possible ghosts.

Doctor Who – Capaldi to Stay in the Tardis
Peter Capaldi will remain the Doctor for another year once the current season nine wraps in a month or two. Jenna Coleman, who plays companion Clara Oswald, is already set to leave the show at the end of this season. How long Capaldi sticks around, and whether we get a full season next year, is unclear. Capaldi is a huge Doctor Who fan, but the filming schedule doesn’t leave him much time to take any other roles.
In other Doctor Who news, the Doctor’s one time robotic companion K9 is getting a movie and it’s coming in 2017. If you re-read that sentence a couple of times don’t worry. It’s exactly as ridiculous as it sounds. Not seen in Doctor Who since 2006 episode ‘School Reunion’, K9 was briefly part of a British-Australian comedy show back in 2010.
The robot dog will now star in its own feature film titled K9: Timequake, with original creator Bob Barker on board. Barker was also a key player in the 2010 series and has spent years and years trying to do different things with the character. K9 is a joke character, right? I’m not going crazy, am I?
Jekyl & Hyde – Complaints
UK broadcaster ITV are in some trouble this week after airing the premiere of their new series, Jekyll & Hyde, at 6:30 pm on a Sunday. The show’s graphic violence prompted more than 800 viewers to complain to both ITV and the UK’s television regulator Ofcom, who has now launched an investigation into the matter.

The show’s tone might also get kids hiding behind the sofa, and not in a good way. With ITV currently planning to keep the ten part series at its early timeslot, there’s going to be a lot of children waking up Monday morning with nightmares.
ITV have pointed to a warning placed before the first episode aired which cautioned parents about the violence coming up in the show. Either way Jekyll & Hyde might do better after the 9 PM watershed, the point where broadcasters are free to air shows with more graphic violence and adult themes. Viewers of the first episode will likely agree it is not a family show.
Jennifer Lopez’ New Show
Jenny-from-the-block may be quite offended if I told her I was a little too young to remember her heyday as an actual pop star. Lopez has done plenty of acting though, and now she’s got a new cop show coming to NBC in January.
Shades of Blue will see Lopez star alongside Goodfellas‘ Ray Liotta as a cop in a crooked Brooklyn police precinct. Her boss (Liotta) often leads his underling to act outside the law to protect the area, but when single mother Harlee Santos (Lopez) is caught by the FBI she is forced to turn informant on her work colleagues.
NBC seem to be planning a big marketing push for the show, which replaces their struggling action drama The Player at the start of next year. I’m not an especially ardent J-Lo fan, but The Player looks too stupid for TV, so I’m chalking this one up as a win. Drea De Matteo, formerly of The Sopranos and Joey, will also star.
Supergirl
Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Is it superman? No, it’s Supergirl. The new CBS series had its premiere this week and we were also given a new trailer for the season ahead. It seems like the show will balance itself between big action set pieces and Kara Danvers’ (that’s this Supergirl’s name by the way) personal romcom adventures. See for yourself:
Sherlock
America’s secret crush on Benedict Cumberbatch continues as the new Sherlock special, The Abominable Bride, is set to play in US cinemas on January 5th and 6th. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the special will screen in more than 500 venues across the country and will include special content not available to lowly UK viewers.
Gilmore Girls

usmagazine.com
I got some positive feedback on the Gilmore Girls story last week, so here’s an update. The show’s revival format of four 90 minute episodes went and confused the entire internet. Now, though, news has reached the web of how this will work: the revival will take place over a single calendar year with each episode representing one of the four seasons. There is no way this could be more of a Gilmore-esque narrative choice.
Limitless
The Bradley Cooper movie that is now a mostly Bradley Cooper free TV show is getting loads more episodes. This time of year is sink or swim season for American television and Limitless seems to have carved itself a big enough audience to get a full 22 episode season order. According to Cinemablend , it’s the second most popular new show on Network television this Autumn.
Golden Globes
Ricky Gervais caused a minor stir several years ago when he hosted a series of successive Golden Globe awards ceremonies. His edgy humour didn’t quite gel with the Hollywood lovies, causing him to be replaced by comedy dream team Amy Poehler and Tina Fey. Now though, Gervais is back to host the 73rd Golden Globes in 2016. No doubt a lot of sour-faced Hollywood types will be getting their backs up about this development.
Jack Black and HBO
HBO, the cable channel that brings you Game of Thrones every year, has officially cancelled Jack Black starring comedy The Brink. It’s an interesting twist, since The Brink had already been renewed by HBO in July. Also starring The Shawshank Redemption‘s Tim Robbins, the half-hour comedy had a steady audience but suffered from mixed reviews. The show followed Robbins’ Secretary of State and Black’s foreign service worker as they attempted to prevent a global war.
Late Night Videos
It’s been a while since we checked in on Trever Noah at The Daily Show. Here he is explaining what’s going on with the Benghazi hearings:
So Jimmy Fallon had a bit of an accident over the weekend. Watch him explain what happened:
Stephen Colbert gets a bit excited about the new Star Wars trailer and manages to predict the entire plot. Don’t watch if you’re avoiding spoilers, maybe.
