We Finally Know Why Venom Has Such A Long Tongue

What is the meaning of life? What happens when we die? Is there really a higher power? All those questions pale in comparison to life’s real great mystery, which is the question of why Venom has such a long tongue. Yup, since he first appeared in Web of Spider-Man #18 back in 1986, fans have always been wondering just why the alien Symbiote’s tongue seemed to be too big for his mouth. And now, at last, we have an answer.

Artist Erik Larsen, who you may know as the creator of Savage Dragon, recently took to Facebook to explain why he decided to give Venom such a gigantic tongue, a feature that would remain with the character ever since. He explains that Venom creator Todd McFarlane (who would go on to create Spawn) originally drew him with an ordinary-sized tongue for a Spider-Man vs. Venom trade paperback, and, determined to add his own unique stamp on the character, Larsen then decided to make the tongue appear even “bigger and crazier” when he was given the opportunity to draw Venom, something that would stick with all future artists. So, there you have it. One of life’s great questions has finally been answered, and comic fans can finally rest easy. Well, they can until Sony releases the Venom movie on October 5, but we can see from the trailer that at least the film will get his tongue right.
