I was 11 years old when I saw the Silence of the Lambs (I had read the book at 10 and needed more)and even from an early age, I was impressed by the portrayal of Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter.
One of the many nuances that sold his role to myself and, probably more importantly, the Academy was the now immortal scene of the mad doctor himself restrained wearing a nightmarish bite mask. It wasn’t the only one they tried on during post-production, however.
Earlier in 2014, previously unseen footage was released by The Criterion Collection to show the stages of screen testing for Hannibal Lecter’s now iconic mask. Watch them below.
And of course, the famous mask itself. Them eyes.
