A rumor on the GamingLeaksAndRumors subreddit alleging the development of a Smash Bros.-style Warner Bros. crossover platform fighting game has been confirmed by GamesBeat’s Jeff Grub on Twitter.

Warner Bros. Fighting Game Details

The original Reddit post also mentioned that Mortal Kombat developers NetherRealm were working on the game, but Grubb has denied this. Who might actually be developing the game remains unknown.

Additionally, Warner Bros. applied for a trademark name for the name MULTIVERSUS, though it is unclear if that’s in reference to this game.

In terms of which characters might be in this Super Smash Warner Bros. game, the leak lists Shaggy from Scooby Doo, Gandalf from Lord of the Rings, Tom & Jerry, Batman, Fred Flinstone, Mad Max and Johnny Bravo as expected playable characters.

Warner Bros. owns the rights to countless other intellectual properties, including but not limited to Austin Powers, DC Comics, Westworld, Game of Thrones, and Friends (and who wouldn’t love the chance to juggle Chandler Bing with a vicious Batman combo).

Crossover Platform Fighters — The Next Big Thing?

While Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. came out in 1999, for a long time it has remained alone in its field of 2D platform-fighter. While there have been other attempts at the formula, like PlayStation All-Stars and Brawlhalla, nothing has risen to Smash Bros.’ level of notoriety and prescience in the fighting game community. The recent release of Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl and its comprehensive mechanics (and even rollback netcode to ensure responsive online play) have shown companies that there is gold in the hills of competitive smash-alike games.
