GAME REVIEW: The Walking Dead: Michonne – Episode 3

The third and final episode of The Walking Dead: Michonne tries its best to pull together disparate plot threads, but feels too much like the starting point of something more – rather than the ending of a smaller-scale story.

Characters with little to no characterisation are thrown at us, pulling the usual heart strings – children, emotional conflict, ‘oh isn’t life terrible now’ type monologues, this is all the same turf we’ve tread previously.

Which isn’t to say the writing is particularly weak or boring, it just feels as though too much has ended up at the end of the story, while the last two episodes saw us rushing from set piece to set piece, this one keeps us rooted and ground in a place neither the player not Michonne herself have much investment in caring about.

It’s a shame, as the distinctly human interactions on display here are better than even the second season offered at times – they just feel shallow and rushed. An interesting story wants to play out here, but it’s scrapping for attention. We’re offered resolutions, but they feel undercooked, perhaps owing to the fact that this character is ultimately out of the hands of Telltale – with both the comics and show offering glances further down Michonne’s narrative pathway.

What we end up with is much the same as the last two episodes – a fine story, some neat characters, but nothing that will mean much in the grander scheme of The Walking Dead narrative or universe. Worth picking up in the sales, but your money is much better spent on either main series.
