Looks like Netflix has another Oscar hopeful on their hands.

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

Netflix just released the official trailer for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, starring Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman, with this film being Boseman’s final performance before his tragic passing.

What’s It About?

The film revolves around a recording session in Chicago, the year of 1927. Tensions rise between Ma Rainey (Davis), her ambitious horn player Levee (Chadwick Boseman), and the white management determined to control the legendary “Mother of the Blues.” Levee has an interest in Ma’s girlfriend, and wants to secure his own future in the music business, spurring his fellow musicians to reveal certain truths that could change everything.

The film is based on Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson’s play. Fences, a film that Davis previously starred in, was also a film adaptation of Wilson’s play

Who’s Involved?

The film will also feature Colman Domingo, Michael Potts, Glynn Turman, Dusan Brown and Taylour Paige.

The film is produced by Denzel Washington and Todd Black, who also produced Fences together. Fences was nominated for Best Picture at the 2017 Academy Awards, and Davis won the Academy award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film. With all the same people coming to bat for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, this looks to be a film that will excel during Oscar season.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom will make its debut in select theatres in November, and be available on Netflix December 18, 2020.
