Junji Ito has been making the rounds in the manga and anime horror industry for years now. His unique, unsettling take on body and supernatural horror has left fans constantly craving for more. His popular manga like Tomie, Gyo, and Uzumaki itself, has propelled Junji Ito into the mainstream when it comes to Japanese horror. If you’re excited about Uzumaki’s anime debut, then look no further than this Uzumaki release date guide.
Admittedly, Junji Ito’s manga usually fare better than the anime and movie adaptations, but fans and producers are still willing to give film adaptations a shot. In 2019, it’s confirmed that a four-episode animated miniseries of Uzumaki is under production. With fingers crossed and expectations high, here are the details about this spine-chilling new anime.
When Is Uzumaki Being Released?
Uzumaki was slated to be released in 2020, but the global pandemic caused production to slow down and be delayed.
Fast forward two years later, and unfortunately, the Uzumaki anime’s release date is still getting delayed. The latest update was for the show to come out in October 2022, but that’s already been confirmed to be delayed based on a tweet in June.
There is currently no confirmed date for Uzumaki’s release but most speculate the anime to release sometime around 2023.
What Is Uzumaki About?
Fortunately, the Uzumaki manga gives fans an idea of the anime’s plot. There is also a lesser-known iteration of Uzumaki: the live-action film from 2000. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a big hit and received reviews that ranged from bad to mixed, though has become a bit of a cult hit.
Uzumaki is about a high schooler named Kirie Goshima and her boyfriend Shuichi Saito as they live in Kurouzu-cho, a town with a mysterious curse related to spirals (in English, Uzumaki translates to spirals).
Disturbing occurrences ranging from obsessions and excessive fear towards the shape of spirals to body parts being disfigured into spirals start happening around the town. Kirie and Shuichi must find out just what exactly is going on and how they can save their hometown from the horrors that plague it.
Which Studio(s) Are Producing Uzumaki
Production I.G and Adult Swim’s in-house production arm Williams Street are co-producing Uzumaki.
Williams Street is the studio behind other popular cartoons such as Rick and Morty, the 2003 Teen Titans, and Samurai Jack. Production I.G on the other hand is an experienced company with tons of great anime like Psycho-Pass, Kuroko’s Basketball, and Haikyu!!.
This isn’t the first time the two studios have worked together either. They have already made an anime in the past called Immortal Grand Prix. It received positive reviews, which is a good sign for Uzumaki fans.
Where Will Uzumaki Be Aired?
Upon release, Uzumaki is expected to air in Adult Swim’s Toonami block before showing in Japan and on Crunchyroll. The anime was first announced at the Crunchyroll Expo 2019 which is why it’s expected to be available there.
Due to the delays, it’s hard to get confirmation on where else Uzumaki will be available. So far, it’s just those two services.
