Ubisoft To Start Banning Rainbow Six Siege Players For Homophobic and Racist Slurs

Siege Chimera

It’s almost a given that whenever a multiplayer game hits the upper echelon of popularity that the toxicity levels will rise. It’s sometimes just human nature to be a piece of shit, especially when you have the veil of relative anonymity to make you feel like you can do or say anything you want.

However, from this week onwards, Ubisoft won’t stand for any of it in Rainbow Six Siege and will issue bans to anyone found to be using hate speech in-game.

In an update on the Siege subreddit, one of the game’s community developers said the following:

“We will be implementing an improvement on the system we have been using to ban players that use racial and homophobic slurs, or hate speech, in game. This is our first step towards managing toxicity in Rainbow Six Siege, and we will have more information to share about our other plans at a later date.”

The length of bans run quite the gamut, ranging from a two-day ban to a permanent one depending on the severity of the hate speech used. When a player is found to be overly toxic, they will be kicked from a match and told why they have been banned with a pop-up — other players will also be notified in-game. There is already a mechanism in place like this once a player is banned for teamkilling.

It’s worth noting that this system is primarily for PC players; consoles have their own easy reporting tools for toxic players to Sony and Microsoft.

As someone with hundreds of hours in Siege, I have come across my fair share of toxicity. I just recently jumped back into the game and have been playing plenty of casual matches to get myself acquainted with the new Operators, which has given me the chance to experience some of the worst members of the community. Here’s hoping these new changes work out for the game in the long run.
