In recent years, Disney has been making more moves into the anime market with shows like Star Wars: Visions and Tokyo Revengers. Among their anime projects is a smartphone gacha game featuring characters that are loosely inspired by some of their popular franchises. Twisted Wonderland was released as a game in 2020 and received its localization in America and Canada in 2022, with a manga adaptation currently being written.
For anime fans, it’s also being developed into its own show. But when can we expect Twisted Wonderland: Season 1 to come out? Here’s everything you need to know about this fascinating cross-media project.
When Is Twisted Wonderland: Season 1 Coming Out?
At the time of writing, there is no official release date for Twisted Wonderland: Season 1. The anime was announced in October 2021. However, apart from the Walt Disney Japan Twitter page sharing a promotional poster, neither Disney nor Aniplex have revealed anything more about this project.
What Is Twisted Wonderland: Season 1 About?
By its premise, Twisted Wonderland seems like it’s going to be a darker version of Little Witch Academia. The plot of the game follows the player-controlled character called Yuu. After being transported to another world, Yuu is taken to a magic training school called Night Ravens College. They get acquainted with the top students at the school, all the while trying to find a way back home.
The dormitories and their respective characters are inspired by the following Disney properties:
- House Heartslabyul is based on the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland
- House Savanaclaw is based on Scar from The Lion King
- House Octavinelle is based on Ursula from The Little Mermaid
- House Scarabia is based on Jafar from Aladdin
- House Pomefiore is based on the Evil Queen from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
- House Ignihyde is based on Hades from Hercules
- House Diasomnia is based on Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty
Season 1 would most likely follow the prologue and book 1, The Rose Red Tyrant. Yu gets introduced to the world and eventually meets Riddle Rosehearts, inspired by the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland. The Twisted Wonderland game is split into six books, excluding the prologue, so there is plenty of content for future seasons.
Which Studio Is Making Twisted Wonderland: Season 1?
The mobile game was a collaboration between Disney and Aniplex. While it’s likely that they will be working together to license the show, it’s harder to predict which animation studio will be working on Twisted Wonderland.
Aniplex has a couple of subsidiary animation studios that they could work with, but Disney has also worked with the likes of Studio Trigger and Production I.G for Star Wars: Visions. The original mobile game had Yana Toboso, the manga artist of Black Butler, doing much of the concept art, so it’s likely that A1 Pictures will be the animators of the show.
Where Will Twisted Wonderland: Season 1 Be Aired?
As this is a Disney project, it’s almost certain that Twisted Wonderland will air on their streaming service Disney+. It will probably air on Crunchyroll as well, as it is a streaming service that Aniplex partly owns.
