Brand New Animal is a science fiction comedy/action series written by Kazuki Nakashima. Following a portion of the human population which are anthropomorphic Beastmen, it was one of Netflix’s best-received anime releases of 2020. Finishing off Season 1 in May of 2020, fans have been eagerly anticipating a follow-up. But what would Brand New Animal: Season 2 consist of? How would Michuru’s adventure through the city of Anima continue?
When is Brand New Animal: Season 2 Coming Out?
As of April 13th, 2023, there isn’t any official news on the release of Season 2 of Brand New Animal. Neither Netflix nor Studio Trigger have said anything, and whether there will even be a second season is debatable. Out of the seven anime series Nakashima has written for, about half of them have received some sort of sequel, either in the form of a new season or a film spin-off.
However, Brand New Animal hasn’t been officially cancelled either. Plus, Netflix has put a few of their series on hold due to scheduling disturbances as a result of the pandemic, so there is still some hope for the continuation of the series.
The announcement of a new season could be as early as the summer of 2023. Season 1 was also released in two parts, the first six episodes coming out in March of 2020 and the last 6 in May of the same year. It’s likely that Netflix would do the same with Season 2 to build up hype.
What is Brand New Animal Season 2 About?
Brand New Animal is an original production. It isn’t based on any pre-existing manga or light novel, so where the second season would hypothetically go would be hard to predict.
Part of Brand New Animal’s story is the relationship between humans and Beastmen. Also, Michuru and Shirou have stayed in Anima City to protect it, so a new threat to the city’s continued survival could be included. There is information about the history of the Beastmen, but Season 2 could take a deeper dive into that aspect.
Which Studio is Making Brand New Animal: Season 2?
Studio Trigger would still be creating Season 2. Their animation style is so distinct that it’s hard to imagine anyone else doing a sequel. However, having producers and studios change throughout the seasons isn’t unheard of in the industry – take Quintessential Quintuplets, for example – so only time will tell if they will stay with the project.
Where Will Brand New Animal: Season 2 be Aired?
Even though there’s no word on the future of Brand New Animal, Season 1 aired exclusively on Netflix, and you can watch it there. It also aired on Fuji TV’s +Ultra in Japan shortly after its Netflix premiere. The series may expand to different platforms to get more of an audience, but for now, if there is a second season, it looks like it will just be on Netflix.
