There are multiple ways to transfer games and save data from your PlayStation 4 to your PlayStation 5, all of which are straightforward and easy. Sony has even printed the transfer process on the PS5 box, quite in line with its approach to cross-generational support, which also includes backwards compatibility and free upgrade paths for many PS4 games.

Here are the ways in which you can transfer data, including games and save files, from PS4 to PS5.

Wi-Fi Data Transfer
Disc and External HDD
PlayStation Store
PlayStation Plus Cloud Storage (for Save Data)
USB (for Save Data)

Wi-Fi Data Transfer

– Update your PS4 to the latest firmware. If you are connected to the internet, the console should automatically check for this. If not, go to [Settings], select [System Software Update] > [Update Now].
– Log in to your PS4 and PS5 with the same PlayStation account, and then connect both consoles to the same Wi-Fi network. Additionally, you can use an ethernet cable to speed up the transfer by connecting the cable to both consoles’ ethernet ports.
– Start the data transfer process on your PS5, and all the installed games plus save files on your PS4 will be brought over to your PS5.

The data will be transferred in the background, so you can continue playing games on your PlayStation 5 even during the transfer process.

Disc and External HDD

You can simply insert a PS4 disc into your PS5, and the console will install the game. It will also need to download and install any patches, however.

If you have PS4 games installed on an external hard disk, you can directly connect it to your PlayStation 5 and the games will run on the new console.

Sony recommends that you play your PS4 games from the external hard disk itself; this will save space in your SSD for PS5 games.

PlayStation Store

If you purchased PS4 games from the PlayStation Store, simply log into your PS5 with the same account and download your games from the Games Library or the PlayStation Store. Find your entire library under Purchases.

PlayStation Plus Cloud Storage (for Save Data)

If you have a PlayStation Plus membership, you can upload your save data to the PlayStation Network from your PS4, and then download it onto your PS5.

USB (for Save Data)

You can copy save data from your PS4 onto a USB drive and then transfer it to your PS5. Make sure that you use the same account on both consoles.
