Tom Holland Shows Off His Acting Chops in Official Trailer for Cherry

Tom Holland has an impressive career ahead of him, and the best thing is, he's just getting started.

Cherry

Apple TV released the official trailer for Cherry, starring Tom Holland and Ciara Bravo.

Cherry is directed by the Russo Brothers, who previously helmed Avengers: Endgame, so working on this film is a reunion for both Holland and the Russos.

What’s It About?

The story follows Holland’s Cherry, as he signs up to be an army medic in Iraq, suffering PTSD as a result of that, and then turning to drugs and a life of crime in order to deal with his PTSD. In a Vanity Fair article, Anthony Russo described the film “as an epic film” while also being “a person’s life journey”. Joe Russo elaborated on the film being told in six chapters, and how the visuals and direction will reflect those different time periods of Holland’s character.

Trailer Breakdown

You can certainly see this in the trailer itself, which shifts in tone – more YA romance for the earlier parts of his life with Emily, which is more slow-moving, before things speed up when it comes to the time he spent in the army. It slows down again after he comes home, and we see the effects of PTSD start to weigh on him, leading to substance abuse. Then it’s fast moving again as it transitions to the bank robbing part of his life.

Cherry is often seen communicating his interior to us prior to his actions. This is a solid choice, since the tone of the movie is constantly shifting, and this way, we stay connected to his character amidst the changes.

The effect of trailers are really 50/50 – they can excite or pretty much spoil everything. This trailer is definitely the latter, and I look forward to see how it all comes together March 12, 2021 on Apple TV+. If you want to catch it earlier, it releases in cinemas February 26, 2021.
