BOOK REVIEW: ‘The Pharos Gate’ by Nick Bantock

The Pharos Gate

The Pharos Gate serves as a sequel to the remarkable Griffin and Sabine: An Unexpected Correspondence. It follows much of the same format as the previous book, with stories being told through artwork, postcards and letters stuck to the book.

Ultimately, it is still a love letter to the physical page, and everything I loved about the original still rung true in this sequel.

The Pharos Gate expands on the mythology and story created in Griffin and Sabine… The mystical elements continue to great success. The correspondence picks up for fans, and quickly descends into an adventurous journey. While Griffin and Sabine… was wonderful, this book benefits from having the set-up already established. We hit the ground running.

The correspondence between Griffin and Sabine works delightfully again. Over the years, Bantock has not forgotten the voice. Ultimately it means that we’re gleefully reunited with the characters, and that in a land of sequels and reboots, The Pharos Gate works as a delightful continuation of people’s beloved characters.

The element of mysticism and destiny are explored further in this book. Not to spoil it for anyone, but it does certainly have a cinematic feel to it. Every element that cannot be logically explained feels natural, for lack of a better oxymoron. The Pharos Gate feels like an extremely natural next step for the beloved characters. Their voices ring true and harmonious, and for a small book the pages go by remarkable quickly, with a tension and a story that keeps readers captivated.

It’s a book that isn’t excluding on first time readers, but acts as a stand-alone (or inclusive) entry into a franchise that will keep people thinking for a long time. Be warned, inside these pages give you the hope to daydream and correspond once again. Pick up the pen, and feel the beauty that this book inspired in you.
